To continue meeting his love interest, Girlfriend, the player protagonist, Boyfriend, must win matches against a variety of other characters by singing and rapping. To complete the song’s notes while maintaining a healthy level of health, players must use timed inputs. The game’s initial development was for the October 2020 Ludum Dare 47 game jam. The Friday Night Funkin’: The Full Ass Game is a complete version that received support on Kickstarter.

The protagonist of the rhythm game Friday Night Funkin’, Boyfriend, faces out against a number of foes in order to maintain his relationship with Girlfriend. Each of the game’s “weeks,” or levels, features three songs that the player must finish. The player’s opponent changes every week, though some structures stray from this by including more than one opponent. The player must imitate the opponent’s notes by pressing the WASD or arrow keys while they are singing (the notes are represented by arrows). Other songs have more intricate patterns, with the player’s pattern occasionally diverging from the opposition’s or both singers engaging in a duet.

Each week, the player has the option of choosing from Easy, Normal, or Hard difficulty. The pace of incoming arrows rises along with the challenge, as the arrow patterns get more intricate. In the top right corner of the week selection screen, the player’s highest score for every week on each difficulty is kept track of and shown. Two alternative play modes are available in the game: a story campaign where songs are performed sequentially and a “free play” option where players can choose any of the game’s musical tracks at will.

Rhytmic Game

The action video game genre called “rhythm game” or “rhythm action” puts to the test a player’s sense of timing. In this type of game, players must push buttons in a specific order as seen on the screen while focusing on dancing or simulating the playing of musical instruments. Multiplayer options are common in rhythm games, and these modes often let players collaborate or compete for the greatest score. New gaming controllers designed to resemble musical instruments, such guitars and drums, are frequently used in rhythm games to help players match notes while performing songs. With pressure-sensitive pads serving as the input method, several dance-based video games demand that the player dance actively on a mat.

A preliminary Friday Night Funkin’ prototype was created by a small group of Newgrounds creators in October 2020 as a submission to Ludum Dare 47; it had no menus and only a few music tracks. The prototype, which had a crude design but unexpected success, sparked many requests for a finished game. Ninjamuffin99 said that he intended to make the game bigger.

Later, on November 1, 2020, Ninjamuffin99 will update this demo with the addition of Week 2, a new fight, along with some new menus and choices. The game gained more attention from sites like YouTube, Twitter, TikTok, and Twitch, which led to a rapid rise in popularity for it on Newgrounds. On Bandcamp and Spotify, the song’s soundtrack by Kawai Sprite is without charge.

Ninjamuffin99 submitted a request to Nintendo in February 2021 asking them to approve the conversion of his game to the Nintendo Switch. He thought that the game’s lack of completion was the reason why his request was denied.

As a limited-time Newgrounds exclusive, Week 7 was made available. Newgrounds, the website, crashed as a result of the spike in traffic. Following Week 7, the game’s developers decided to concentrate on creating Friday Night Funkin’: The Full Ass Game rather than continuing to release weekly updates.
