The series revolves around SpongeBob SquarePants, a bubbly and cheerful sea sponge, and the cast of his aquatic friends. SpongeBob has a childish enthusiasm and joy for life. This makes him a diligent worker at a fast-food restaurant called Krusty Krab. SpongeBob lives in a pineapple with his pet snail Gary in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom. He attends Mrs. Puff’s Boating School, as it is his dream to get his boating license. Unfortunately, SpongeBob is a fearful and reckless driver. SpongeBob wants everyone to be as happy as he is, and he will go out of his way, every single time, to try and make that happen.

SpongeBob’s best friend is Patrick Star, a pink sea star who lives under a rock. SpongeBob and Squidward are his two neighbors. Patrick is rather dim-witted and ignorant but pleasant and friendly. Despite his mental setbacks, he thinks of himself as intelligent. Patrick can have a short temper when something upsets him and is often jealous of others. However, he has also proven himself as a very loyal friend.

Squidward Tentacles is SpongeBob’s neighbor and co-worker. Despite his name, he is not a squid but an octopus. He is grumpy, cynical, and often annoyed by SpongeBob and Patrick’s childish behavior. Squidward likes playing the clarinet and painting self-portraits but dislikes his job as a cashier at Krusty Krab. He is a misanthrope who, above all, prefers to be left alone. He also thinks of himself as a misunderstood and underappreciated genius. Squidward appreciates art and finer things in life. Even though SpongeBob often irritates him, he considers him his friend.

SpongeBob’s boss and the owner of Krusty Krab is Mr. Krabs, a greedy red crab who talks like a sailor and runs his restaurant as if it was a pirate ship. The most important thing to him is money and making a profit. The only person he seems to somewhat care about is his teenage daughter, a grey sperm whale named Pearl. Mr. Krabs can be harsh towards his employees when they do not benefit him. We have to admit that he does have a softer side that pops up from time to time.

Mr. Krabs’ rival is Plankton, who runs an unsuccessful restaurant called the Chum Bucket with his computer wife, Karen. Plankton has one goal in life and one goal only. It is to steal the secret recipe for Mr. Krabs’s popular Krabby Patty burgers. He hopes to then run Mr. Krabs out of business. Plankton and Karen come up with various plans to steal the formula, but they always fail. It was revealed on the show that Mr. Krabs and Plankton were best friends during their childhood. However, adispute over the Krabby Patty secret formula ended their friendship for real.

Another main character is Sandy Cheeks, a thrill-seeking American squirrel from Texas who wears an air-filled diving suit to be able to breathe underwater. She lives in a tree enclosed in a clear glass dome locked by an airtight, hand-turned seal. Sandy is very athletic. She trains karate and loves extreme sports. She is very proud of her Texan heritage and has shown to miss her homeland a lot. She works as a scientist. Sandy is an energetic, passionate, and talented character who stands up for herself and her friends.
