Sonic the Hedgehog is a Japanese video game series and media franchise created and owned by Sega. The franchise follows Sonic, an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog who battles the evil Doctor Eggman, a mad scientist. Sonic the Hedgehog games are mostly developed by Sonic Team. The other games, developed by various studios, include spin-offs in the racing, fighting, party, and sports genres. The franchise also incorporates printed media, animations, feature films, and merchandise.
Sega developed the first Sonic game, released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis, to compete with Nintendo’s mascot Mario. Its success helped Sega become one of the leading video game companies during the fourth generation of video game consoles in the early 1990s. Sega Technical Institute developed the next three Sonic games, plus the spin-off Sonic Spinball in 1993. After a hiatus during the unsuccessful Saturn era, the first major 3D Sonic game, Sonic Adventure, was released in 1998 for the Dreamcast. Sega exited the console market and shifted to third-party development in 2001, continuing the series on Nintendo, Xbox, and PlayStation systems.
These games feature recurring elements such as the ring-based health system, level locales, and fast-paced gameplay. They typically feature Sonic setting out to stop Eggman’s schemes for world domination, and the player navigates levels that include springs, slopes, bottomless pits, and vertical loops. Later games added a large cast of characters; some, such as Miles “Tails” Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, and Shadow the Hedgehog, have starred in spin-offs. The franchise has crossed over with other video game franchises like Mario & Sonic, Sega All-Stars, and Super Smash Bros.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is an upcoming action-adventure comedy film directed by Jeff Fowler and written by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington, based on the video game franchise published by Sega. The sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog stars Ben Schwartz returning as the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog, with the rest of the cast consisting of James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Shemar Moore, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Idris Elba, and Jim Carrey. The film follows Sonic and Tails as they try to prevent Doctor Eggman and Knuckles the Echidna from finding Master Emerald.
Paramount Pictures announced the sequel to the first movie in May 2020. Filming took place from March to June 2021 in Vancouver and Hawaii. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States on April 8, 2022, by Paramount Pictures in association with the Sega Sammy Group. In February 2022, Paramount confirmed that a third film and a spin-off series focusing on Knuckles are in development.
After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is ready for more freedom and to make his mark as a hero. Tom and Maddie agree to leave him home alone while they go on vacation. As soon as they are gone, Dr. Robotnik returns with a new partner, Knuckles. They search for an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and they embark on a journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.
The teaser poster for this movie was revealed on December 7, 2021. The next day, the first trailer was released at The Game Awards 2021. The trailer includes a reworked version of Masato Nakamura’s “Emerald Hill Zone” music from the original Sonic the Hedgehog 2 video game from 1992. The trailer received an overwhelmingly positive reaction from fans, with Elba as Knuckles attracting additional praise. Reviewers noted the difference in feedback compared to the first film’s initial trailer that was released on April 30, 2019. During the week before the Super Bowl, Paramount released four TV spots showcasing new footage and the reveal of the Death Egg robot. The theatrical release poster excluded O’Shaughnessey’s name, leading to fan outcry. The international poster, released shortly after, included her name and Sumpter’s on the upper billing block. The second and final trailer was released on March 14, 2022. The film’s poster was also revealed, resembling the poster for the original Sonic the Hedgehog 2 video game.
