The Walking Dead is a television series based on a comic book series of the same name. It tells the story of a group of survivors of the zombie outbreak, trying to stay alive after the collapse of modern society. They need to defend themselves not only from the zombies (known as walkers) but often from other groups of survivors who have their own rules and ideas and aren’t always friendly.

One of the protagonists on the show is Rick Grimes, a former sheriff’s deputy who was shot in the line of duty and fell into a coma, only to awake and discover the world was overridden with zombies. Rick traveled to Atlanta in search of his wife, Lori, and his son, Carl. He found them in the Atlanta camp of survivors, and eventually became the leader of the group. At a certain point after Lori’s death, Rick began a relationship with Michonne Hawthorne, and they had a child together. After blowing up a bridge to protect his loved ones and allies, his friends believe Rick is dead. However, he is secretly rescued and taken away on a helicopter to an unknown location to begin a new journey. Rick is a smart man, a good friend, and a protective father and husband. He has a strong moral code that is put to the test many times throughout the series.

 Another main character is Daryl Dixon, introduced to the series as a southerner, expert tracker, living in the shadow of his brother Merle. Despite his bad temper and moodiness, he is a welcome addition to the group thanks to his skills in hunting, observation, and weapon handling. After Merle disappeared, Daryl started to bond more with some of the other survivors, namely Carol Peletier and Beth Greene. He effectively became Rick Grimes’ right hand, best friend, and later a brother figure. Daryl is a tough man, both physically and mentally. He is often aggressive, but still not quite as violent as his older brother, Merle. He does have a softer, caring side and is loyal to his friends.

One of the fan-favorites is Michonne Hawthorne (later Michonne Grimes). After suffering the loss of her boyfriend and toddler son, she initially focused on surviving alone and perfecting her swordsmanship. After the Greene family farm was taken over by zombies, Michonne encountered Andrea and the two became friends. At some point, they were brought to the fortified town of Woodbury led by The Governor. Andrea decided to stay there, but Michonne didn’t trust The Governor and left. Soon enough, she met Rick and his group of survivors. Though initially distrustful of each other, Michonne became an integral part of the community. She and Rick developed a friendship and eventually an intimate relationship. Michonne is tough but kind-hearted. She tends to walk alone and keep much of her past secret, but over time she opens up.

Carol Peletier evacuated her home with her abusive husband Ed and daughter Sophia, hoping to find refuge in Atlanta. They joined the survivors with Lori, Carl, and Shane Walsh whom they met on the way. After Ed’s death and Sophia’s disappearance and ultimate demise, Carol, now the last surviving member of her family, gradually built her strength and confidence, becoming skillful with weapons and gaining medical knowledge. She also bonded with Daryl. Later Carol married Ezekiel and became the adoptive mother of Henry. In the beginning, Carol is rather meek and introverted, but she eventually finds her voice. In later seasons, Carol’s pragmatic and resourceful nature is revealed.

Maggie Greene (now Maggie Rhee) is the last surviving member of the Greene family and Glen Rhee’s widow. Initially, she had trouble adapting to the changing world, as she and her family believed the walkers were simply sick. After joining Rick’s group, however, she grew into a skilled fighter. She eventually became the leader of the Hilltop Colony. She and Glenn’s relationship started casually until Maggie realized she was in love with him, ultimately leading to their marriage. Maggie is an intelligent, caring, and brave woman. She is shown to be a loving daughter, sister, friend, wife, and mother.

Glenn Rhee was the main supply runner for the Atlanta survivor camp and he saved Rick Grimes from walker-infested Atlanta, bringing him back to his camp to reunite him with his family. During the group’s stay on the Greene family farm, Glenn formed a relationship with Maggie Green. He married her and the two eventually conceived a child. After joining the Alexandria Safe-Zone, Glenn became a supply runner there. Glenn was quick-thinking, bright, and resourceful. Despite all the horrors he experienced, he still had an enthusiasm for life and a positive attitude.

The series premiered on October 31, 2010. The eleventh season started airing on August 22, 2021 and is expected to come to an end this year. The Walking Dead inspired several spin-offs, web episodes, and video games, and there are more spin-off series and movies currently in development.
