Requirements

Let’s start with the requirements for getting a driver’s license. In the United States, the process for acquiring your license depends on state laws and your age.

Prove your knowledge about the United States of America.

When you’re under 18 years old, you can usually get a “Learner’s Permit”, which allows you to practice driving with an adult of 21 years or older present. In some states, you must be 16 years old to apply, while in others, you only have to be 14.

Documents

Regardless of your age, you will need these documents:

  • certified US birth certificate,
  • social security card,
  • proof of school enrollment or graduation.

Some states will require more or less documentation. You will also have to bring a cash payment for the exam you are taking.

Money, money, money… Find out how rich will you be!

The steps to obtain a license vary by state. Some teens will only have to pass a practical exam, others will also be required to pass a written exam. Additionally, you will have to do a certain amount of practice, called “Driver’s Ed”. Most states require you to do around 30 hours of behind-the-wheel driving practice or an approved driving education course.

People over 18 years old don’t have to take driver’s ed in most states, but it’s recommended. The documents they will have to provide include:

  • proof of identity (some states only require one form of identity while others require two),
  • social security card,
  • proof of address or state residency.

Studying material

What do the driving test questions include? Here is some of the basic material you need to know as a driver.

Traffic signs

Traffic signs inform you about traffic regulations, on the road dangers, where you are, how to get to your destination, and where services are located.

Warning signs are usually yellow and diamond-shaped, with black letters or symbols. They warn you to slow down and be prepared to stop if needed. Some common warning signs include “Workers”, “Yield Ahead”, “Pedestrian Crossing”, or “Speed Zone Ahead”.

Regulation signs are usually white rectangles with black or red letters or symbols. They give you information about rules for traffic directions, lane use, turning, and other special situations. These include stop signs, yield signs, or no passing signs.

Destination signs are green color. They have white letters and white symbols as well. They show the direction and distance to locations. Route signs belong to this group.

Service signs are blue with white letters and symbols. They show the location of services, like gas stations or rest areas.

Traffic signals

Traffic signals are lights that tell you when and where to stop and go. They are usually red, yellow, and green from top to bottom or left to right.

A green traffic light means you can go through the intersection, unless there is an emergency vehicle you should yield to.

How well do you know all the car logos?

What does a steady yellow light mean? It means that the traffic light will soon turn to red. You must stop if it’s safe to do so.

A steady red light means you have to stop. You must wait until the traffic light turns green and there is no crossing traffic before you keep going.

Lines and symbols

Lines and symbols on the road divide lanes and tell you when you can pass other vehicles or change lanes. Solid lines along the side of the road show you where the edge of the road or lane is located.

A roundabout is an intersection control device with traffic circulating the island. Approaching vehicles must yield to the traffic in the circle. Always yield to pedestrians and bicyclists legally crossing the road. Inside the circle, always drive around the circle to the right.

How do you turn? Start from the line the closest to the direction you want to go and turn into the lane closest to the one you came from. When making a turn, move from one lane to another as directly as you can without traversing lane lines or disrupting traffic. Once you have completed your turn, you can change to another line if you need to.
