The first season is set in the present times. Reginald Hargreeves is dead and the estranged siblings meet again at his funeral. Each of them has their own thing going. Luther has been on the Moon for the past four years. Allison is a famous actress, Vanya – a melancholic violinist. Diego is a vigilante with a tendency to get in trouble. Klaus has a drug addiction and is a mess overall. Ben has died tragically years ago and is a ghost only able to interact with Klaus, whereas Five disappeared sixteen years earlier. Five comes back from the future and informs his siblings of the incoming apocalypse. The siblings try to solve the mystery of their father’s death, while also coming up with the solution for the imminent end of the world.

Luther Hargreeves, aka Number One aka Spaceboy, is the leader of The Umbrella Academy. He possesses superhuman strength and durability. To save Luther’s life after he was injured during a mission, his father injected him with a serum that gave him an ape-like appearance. Luther is dedicated to his father’s cause and treats his role as a leader seriously. He’s never left the Academy and never had a life outside of it. After learning that Reginald never read his reports from the Moon mission, Luther feels devastated and like he lost his purpose in life. He’s shown to be very righteous and to have a firm belief in right and wrong. He’s a caring individual and will put himself in danger without hesitation to protect others.

Diego Hargreeves, aka Number Two aka The Kraken, is a rebellious troublemaker and vigilante. He can change the trajectory of anything he throws, including knives and bullets. As Number Two Diego was always in rivalry with his brother Luther, feeling like he can never be good enough for his father. Diego is impulsive and brazen, with a tendency to act first and think later. He’s the most emotional among his siblings and the only one to have a close connection with their robot mother. Underneath his cockiness, there’s a lot of insecurity and a deep need to prove himself.

Allison Hargreeves, aka Number Three aka The Rumor, is a famous actress with the ability to control minds and bend reality by saying the phrase “I heard a rumor…”. Allison seemed to have abused her power a lot when she was younger, using it to advance her career and even make someone love her. She changed a lot since she lost custody of her daughter, however. Now she seems adamant about never using her power again and she’s done a lot of personal growth. Allison has a kind heart and strong values. She forgives easily and has a lot of love for her siblings. She’s a thoughtful and reflective person.

Klaus Hargreeves, aka Number Four aka The Séance, is a flamboyant drug and alcohol addict with the ability to communicate with the dead and temporarily make them corporeal. It seems like the trauma of constantly seeing dead people pushed him into addiction. Klaus loves fun and all the pleasures of life. His irresponsible lifestyle often makes his siblings dismiss him, but Klaus has an insightful side and sometimes can even be a voice of reason. Though self-absorbed at times, his actions show selflessness and loyalty to his family.

Five, aka Number Five aka The Boy, is a boy with the ability to travel through space and time. After going to the future he ended up stuck, unable to go back. He survived on his own for decades before being recruited into The Commission, a secretive agency that keeps tabs on the established timeline of the world, finding and eliminating those who would threaten it. He eventually betrayed them to get back to his time to warn his family of the impending apocalypse. Five is a ruthless and pragmatic individual. He’s very smart and often dismissive of others as inferior to his intellect. Despite his sarcastic demeanor, Five does have compassion and cares for his family.

Ben Hargreeves, aka Number Six aka The Horror, possesses the ability to summon eldritch creatures through a portal to another dimension located in his body. His death is one of the main reasons why The Academy disbanded. Ben is a very introverted and stoic person usually. He cares deeply for Klaus.

Vanya Hargreeves, aka Number Seven aka The White Violin, is a meek violinist, somewhat alienated from her siblings as the only one without powers. In reality, she can convert sound waves into physical force, an ability her father suppressed with drugs as he considered it too powerful to control. She feels like an outcast and had a desire for someone to care for her. Vanya can seem stoic and emotional, but it isn’t entirely true.
