Pokemon, also known as Pocket Monsters, is a Japanese franchise founded by Nintendo, Creatures, and Game Freak. It was created by Satoshi Tajiri, Japanese video game designer, and is managed by The Pokemon Company. The series is centered around trainers who catch and then train fictional monster species, thriving in various habitats around the Pokemon world. Pokemon trainers take part in duels against each other, and also in tournaments and leagues. At the moment, there are 1015 Pokemon species in total. The rooster is expanded with new species and also evolutions of current pocket monsters.
The Pokemon franchise dates back to the childhood of its creator Satoshi Tajiri. It started as a simple hobby of Tajiri who enjoyed catching tadpoles and various insects near his home in suburban Tokyo. This childhood activity inspired Tajiri to create a world filled with Pokemon creatures which can be caught and trained. Pokemon is meant to be a nostalgic universe which reminds Pokemon fans of their childhood fun, no matter their age.
The first games – Pokemon Red And Green, which were released as a pair – premiered in Japan on February 27, 1996 and were available on Nintendo Game Boy. On this day, the dream of Satoshi Tajiri was fulfilled. People of all ages could enjoy catching monsters from the pool of 151 species, training them and battling NPCs in order to become a Pokemon Master.
