Kakegurui is a Japanese manga series that was written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Tōru Naomura. It started to be serialized in March 2014, and there are fourteen volumes as of the start of 2021. The manga was then adapted for television, but there have also been English releases of the manga. The series has also inspired various spin-off manga, such as the prequel called Kakegurui Twin. The manga is officially called Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler, and it’s set in Hyakkaou Private Academy, which is one of the most prestigious schools in Japan. Unlike normal schools in the country, the hierarchy of this fictional school is determined through gambling. We meet many different characters throughout the series, all of whom have unique characteristics that they bring to the show.
Firstly, we meet the main protagonist, who is called Yumeko Jabami. Yumeko is a transfer student who has an innocent face but is addicted to gambling and entering high-stakes situations. Yumeko aims to destroy the hierarchy of the school system just for fun, through a keen intellect, and by uncovering some of the cheating that goes on with the more powerful students in the school. We meet many characters on his journey and during the games that he is involved in.
The story was so popular with the manga that an anime television show was created by MAPPA, which aired in Japan in July 2017 for a couple of months. The second season then came in 2019, and it was soon after licensed by Netflix to be shown outside of Japan. This has helped to expand the audience of the show and introduce more people than ever before to this incredible story. A live-action drama adaptation was even released in Japan in 2018, and the second series of this came the year after. On top of that, there have been two light novels and a video game, so fans of the series are always finding a new way to immerse themselves in the series.
Fans were excited to learn that a film adaptation would be made in 2019 featuring the same actors as the drama series. A sequel is set to be released this year, which fans are also eagerly anticipating. The wide variety of the media that the series has produced is one of the reasons that it has such universal appeal, as there really is something for everyone.
