American Generations

You’re probably aware that the concept of generations is unique to the USA. It’s here where it was born. We like to divide people into different groups. And while it might be useful sometimes, it causes a lot of unnecessary drama in today’s society. We all remember how Baby Boomers were annoyed by the outburst of the “Ok, boomer!” trend. Millennials also got their fair share of hate speech. They are said to be one of the most hated generations in the history of the United States.

What is sometimes hard to understand is that all of these “troubles” were started by Generation Z. These people were born between 1995 and 2012, but nowadays we also call the youngest Generation Alpha. Young people tend to make jokes that the elderly don’t understand. And it has always been that way. But Gen Z seems to be a little different. The change in what’s funny and what’s off limits was rapid and scary for many people in the last 10 years. No wonder it was impossible for some to adapt to the new reality.

The Newest Generations

It’s one of the newest generations in the US. These are the children who don’t remember the world without the Internet. Most of you, who are reading this text right now, probably belong to this generation.

There’s a brilliant book written by Jean Twenge that discovers all about “iGen”. We highly recommend reading it if you’re interested in a more scientific approach. She has found out many surprising facts about young people nowadays, some of which are listed here:

  • They don’t enter romantic relationships too easily
  • They’re very tolerant
  • They’re less likely to go to church
  • Teen pregnancy is very rare
  • They don’t go out to see movies.

If you identify with some of the sentences above, you’re probably a member of Generation Z. It has its pros and cons. There are things that iGeners miss out on. One of them is books. They don’t read at all. Only for school, but not everyone. Partly it’s due to the lack of attention they experience on daily basis. Being slightly addicted to social media certainly doesn’t help.

Generation Z and Technology

Instagram and TikTok are great sources of entertainment. But they’re also known to cause attention-span problems. Their users are less likely to focus for a longer time and concentrate on whatever their friends have to say in real life. This may result in some social problems, which most of the members of Generation Z are prone to experience anyways.

A large part of this generation’s life happens on the Internet. It’s natural for them. They use technology for everything. If they’re bored, they will play some games on their phones or PlayStations. When they need to do some academic work, they will simply open their laptop and start reading a pdf, or more likely, watch a Ted Talk on the topic.

Millennials

Millennials are recognizable all around the world. This is the generation of success. They grew up thinking they can achieve anything they want. After their graduation, they realized that this may have not been completely true.

Most of them had the Internet growing up. But not on their phones. It was common to have one computer in the house that would be used by everyone. Privacy just wasn’t a concept back then. Every child had to wait their turn to use the computer, and parents often punished their children by restricting their screen time.

Millennials lived through the 2008 economic crisis. Most of them still remember how hard it was for them to live back then. Starting an adult life during an economic decline is not the easiest thing in the world. But they managed. Many of them still blame their parents for this situation.

This generation remembers the big tech companies being born. Amazon, Google, and Apple all flourished when they were young adults. It gave them an enormous opportunity to experience technology firsthand, as one of the first people in the world. Millennials started using their phones in their teenage years or their twenties. It was a relief for them. After years of being called the latchkey kids, they finally could just call their friends and organize their days efficiently. I mean, it was as good as a 10-year-old can imagine, of course.

Generation X

This is the generation we think of as Boomers, but it’s simply not true. Generation X was born between 1965 and 1979. It seems like a short period, but as a generation, they experienced a lot.

They remember how the USA reached its highest level of education. During their lifetime they experienced many history-shaping events, they were too young to learn at school about. I mean the fall of the Berlin Wall, the fall of communism in Europe, and the rising significance of China. Generation X experienced firsthand what it’s like not to be able to use the abundance of gas. There were some serious shortages during their lifetime.

On the fun side, they contributed to the development of the Disco culture and music video hype. This was the first generation to remember MTV. It was almost 50 years ago, can you believe it?

Baby Boomers

This generation is very famous. It’s very big, these are the people born after World War II and Great Depression. It was important to have as many children as possible to get the country back on track. They were lucky enough to experience the world without any major wars, and prosperity.

It is common to associate them with the Flower Children who liked to take drugs and enjoy their twenties to the fullest. Surely, it was just a small group of people, but we all know how stereotypes work. Boomers contributed to the development of capitalism. They became the best consumers in the world, famous for spending every dollar they made.
