According to some traditions, everything in the world comes from elements. The five-element theory in Chinese medicine highlights elements like wood, fire, earth, water, and metal. The idea of elements is also related to astrology and other aspects of the universe. What element am I? What element are you connected to? Discover it with our element quiz!

Classical elements

Classical elements were present in many ancient philosophies to explain the complexity of nature and all existing matter, usually focusing on fire, earth, air, and water. The name is supposed to differentiate this concept from the periodic table elements.

Elements in ancient philosophies

The ancient Greeks believed in the existence of four major elements: earth, air, water, and fire, accompanied by the fifth one – aether. According to Aristotle, aether was heavenly, spiritual, and less connected to the material realm than the other elements. The stars, for example, were thought to be made of aether because the Greeks believed that aether, unlike the other elements, did not change or corrupt with time.

All elements were associated with specific traits. For example, the fire was hot and dry, while the air was hot and wet. Hippocrates linked them to the “humors” in the human body. The humors were supposed to be bodily fluids that determined the person’s temperament and health.

People attempted to describe the nature of the world around them using classical elements. Many held the view that the way the elements interacted encouraged balance. Disruptions in this balance led to things like natural disasters and health issues.

There is a theory in traditional Chinese philosophy that describes five elements: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. It’s called the Wu Xing and often translated as Five Phases, Five Elements, or Five Movements. According to it, the elements make up the foundation of the universe and all natural phenomena.

The theory was in use in a variety of early Chinese thought disciplines, including seemingly unrelated ones like Feng shui, astrology, military tactics, or martial arts.

Wu Xing describes the elements’ creation and destruction cycles, as well as their interactions with one another. Metal, for example, produces water; water sustains wood; wood feeds fire; fire produces earth, and earth bears metal.

Elements in Paganism

Neo-Paganism belief systems believe in the four elements: earth, air, fire, water, and sometimes also lightning. Some Wiccan practices add another one, called a spirit or self. What element am I?

In Neo-Paganism, the earth is a feminine element that links to stability and fertility. It represents all the aspects of our existence: birth, life, death, and rebirth. Common associations are gems, land, and colors brown and green.

The air symbolizes a connection to the soul and the breath of life. It disperses worries and troubles and transports positive energy to people far away. This element is commonly associated with communication, mind, focus, and colors yellow and white.

The element of fire is cleansing, passionate, and masculine. It represents willpower, vitality, and energy. Fire is capable of both creation and destruction. Hearth and the colors red and orange are popular associations.

Water represents cleansing, healing, and recovery. Consecrated water is used in many spiritual and religious practices, including Catholicism. Some Wiccans use it to bless the circle and all the items inside. Water is commonly associated with the color blue.
