Racist And Racism

Racism can mean different things for different people. It is often associated with prejudice, discrimination, inequality, and hatred towards certain groups of people. This social phenomena is more complex than it seems. Depending on an area, it can be a multi-layered problem, or just a nasty habit of a few natives. A lot of people still disregard racism as a serious matter. It is often due to the fact that they are not a member of a discriminated group and don’t experience the hardships of hated race firsthand.

Definition Of Racism

According to the definition, people who are racists believe that races inherit certain sets of attributes which correspond with their behavior. Because of that, certain races may possess better behavioral traits than the other. This false belief leads to the feeling of superiority among people who think their race is the best.

Anyone who follows the media, probably stumbled upon articles about white or black supremacists at some point. These kinds of people often engage in criminal behavior as a way to prove their point. People who use extreme means against members of other races are called fanatics, suprematists, or extremists. Their behavior stems from deep hatred and unrealistic dreams of greatness.

Racism – Etymology

The words ‘racism’ and ‘racist’ were coined in the 19th century by social scientists. It was then believed that the human population can or should be divided into races, hence the term ‘racism’. The division of races was to be done according to the abilities and dispositions of certain groups of people. This inevitably would lead to inequality among these groups of people. If there is a category, there are privileges, salaries, rights, and acceptance, all of which would be unevenly distributed among the created groups. The term ‘racist’ was used to describe a person who shares the aforementioned beliefs.

Today we know that such differentiation has no basis in science. The idea that races possess different behavioral traits was debunked by modern biology. The research of the human genome indicates that race does not correspond with a person’s attributes in a meaningful way. What we should pay attention to is ethnicity, geography, and other empirical criteria. The race has less to do with our behavior than we think. There are many environmental factors we should consider instead.

Racism In The USA

When it comes to racism, the United States remains as the country where the voice of discriminated groups is the loudest. This happens not without a reason, as there is still a lot of inequality in the USA. The situation undoubtedly improved in recent years, but the problem still remains and needs to be addressed.

According to research conducted by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and National Public Radio (NPR), almost half of the African American population in the USA were met with prejudice when trying to rent an apartment or buy a house. What is more, 18% of Asian Americans admit they experienced racial discrimination during interactions with police.

Racial discrimination is also experienced by Latinos. About 20% of Latinos have avoided medical care at least once due to the fear of being treated poorly.

There is no doubt that racism is a problem in America. Life is challenging and difficult as it is, no one should experience additional stress and hardships because of the color of their skin, haircut, eyes, or any physical traits.
