Understanding Homosexuality

Homosexuality is best described as interest or sexual attraction to members of the same gender. The most often used synonym to homosexuality is the word ‘gay’. ‘Lesbianism’, a female homosexuality, is a less frequently used term.

Homosexuality has a vast and long history. The way it is perceived by different nations, cultures, and religions changed throughout the ages. While we still have to combat prejudices against sexual identities other than heterosexual, the quality of life is getting better and better for the LGBTQ community. There is still much to be done in the realm of laws and human rights, we can’t deny it. However, the future looks more appealing than ever before, with more acceptance developing in many countries.

Lesbian – Origins Of The Term

Lesbian is the term that describes a woman who is attracted to members of the same gender. In other words, lesbian is a homosexual female. The male substitute of the word is ‘gay’, a man who is romantically or sexually attracted to other males. However, some women prefer to use terms ‘gay woman’ or just ‘gay’ as a way to describe their sexual identity.

The Island Of Lesbos

Like many words which are in use today, the roots of ‘lesbian’ can be traced back to the Greek language. The original meaning of the word is no doubt surprising. It referred to people or things related to the island of Lesbos. It is associated with Sappho, a well-known female poet and community leader from Lesbos. Sappho is also an author of many love poems which she wrote to women in 660 BCE. Other works of the poet included romantic and erotic verses featuring men. Her activity led to the emergence of ‘sapphic’, an adjective that was derived from her name.

Lesbianism And Lesbian Love

Mentions of Sappho’s romantic association with other women come from the 18th century. In 1870, the term ‘lesbianism’ was commonly used as a way to describe a woman who has erotic interest in the same gender, or has homosexual relations with other women. In 1883, the phrase ‘lesbian love’ showed up in U.S. medical journals, which declared romantic and sexual relations between women as pathological.

In the 19th century, more phrases gained popularity and found their way into common language. ‘Lesbian couple’, ‘lesbian kiss’ or ‘lesbian sex’ described specific activities between women. By 1904, ‘lesbian’ was used as a noun.

Bisexuality

Sexual orientation other than heterosexuality and homosexuality include bisexuality, a sexual attraction to both men and women. Those who identify as bisexual are often called ‘bi’. Bisexuals can be equally interested in both genders or have a stronger affection towards specific sex. If you think you are lesbian but are also interested in men to some degree, there is a possibility that your sexual identity is ‘bi’.

There are various definitions of bisexuality. The most popular in use encompasses attraction to:

  • Both men and women
  • Two or more genders or sexes
  • Own gender and to another one
  • All genders and sexes
  • Attraction regardless sex or gender

‘Bi’ in bisexual means ‘double’ or ‘two’. The term was coined by Charles Gilbert Chaddock, American neurologist. It was first used in his english translation of Psychopathia Sexualis in 1892 which included a theory that declared that a person who is attracted to the members of both genders has a brain that possesses characteristics of both sexes, or that is partly of another sex. Psychopathia Sexualis describes this phenomena as ‘hermaphroditic’, a term that was previously used in botany to name plants that have male and female parts.
