What Does It Mean To Be Stupid?

Stupidity is usually associated with lack of cognitive skills, intelligence, and understanding. People who struggle with learning new concepts or following basic instructions are considered stupid. Inability to listen carefully to what others are saying and confusing two things with each other is what makes some people appear unintelligent.

Stupidity can also be understood as the lack or opposite of intelligence. Intelligence is the human capacity for understanding, reasoning, logic, planning, critical thinking, problem solving, gathering information, and emotional knowledge. It is the ability to obtain information, process and then apply it in a way that benefits a given individual. If someone lacks the above qualities, they are considered stupid.

Stupidity – Etymology

The term ‘stupid’ comes from the Latin word ‘stupere’ which means astonished or numb. It also refers to stupor, a state in which a person is almost completely unaware.

The online Merriam-Webster dictionary states that words ‘stupidity’ and ‘stupid’ were first used in the English language in 1541. Since that time, ‘stupid’ were used such terms as moron, idiot, fool, and dumb.

Theory Of Stupidity

Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s theory of stupidity states that stupid individuals are more dangerous than evil people. This is because we can’t protect ourselves against stupid people. While we can come up with a plan on how to respond to the actions of wicked individuals, we lack strategies to deal with fools, whose behavior is unpredictable and devoid of goals.

As long as we know what evil people aim to achieve, we can protest, fight back and strategize to destroy their mischievous plans. However, we have no idea what stupid people are up to and thus we stand defenseless against them. That is why we must be more cautious while dealing with a stupid individual than an evil one.

What is worse, a stupid person lacks knowledge and perspective to differentiate between good and evil. They can become evil without realizing it, causing more damage than a smart villain.
