What is NBA?

If you’re a fan, you probably don’t need to be introduced to this organization, but let’s put some facts out there for the newbies! The National Basketball Association is a North American professional league based in the USA, with one team from Canada. It’s one of the most successful sports associations in the world.

NBA history

The NBA was formed in 1949 by the union of two rival organizations. The league was troubled with money issues from its beginning, and by the early 80s, it struggled. The NBA grew tremendously under the stern governance of David Stern and morphed into a global entertainment corporation. The famous rivalry between Magic Johnson and Larry Bird and the stardom of Michael Jordan brought in a wave of new fan interest.

The post-Jordan departure era has seen an increase in international players in the league. One of them was Dirk Nowitzki, thought to be one of the greatest players of all time.

NBA teams

There are currently 30 teams in the NBA, separated into the Western Conference and Eastern Conference. Every team plays 82 games during each regular season. After the regular season has ended, the top 16 teams advance to the playoffs, where they compete for the prestigious NBA championship.

Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics team was founded in 1946 in Boston, Massachusetts. The Celtics have the most documented victories of any NBA team.

The team’s nickname, “Celtics”, and its mascot, Lucky the Leprechaun, are an homage to Boston’s historical Irish population, as well as the Original Celtics, the headlining team before the NBA’s formation.

Los Angeles Lakers

The team’s origins date back to 1947 when the disbanded Detroit Gems was purchased. The new team was based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and took the name “Lakers” (“Lake Boys”) after the state’s nickname, “Land of 10,000 Lakes.” Before 1960, the Lakers moved their headquarters to Los Angeles.

George Mikan was considered the first superstar of the NBA. Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabaar, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kobe Bryant are among the other notable Lakers players.

The Lakers have the record for the most consecutive wins (33), which they set in 1971/72. Forbes magazine named the Lakers the most expensive NBA team in 2012, with an estimated value of $900 million.

Chicago Bulls

The team was founded in 1966 and is based in Chicago. The Bulls saw their greatest success in the 90s, with Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and coach Phil Jackson leading them to multiple championships.

The Bulls are the only NBA team to have won multiple national titles while never losing an NBA Finals series. Their success helped to popularize the NBA around the world.

The Chicago Bulls are renowned for their involvement in the community outside of basketball due to its charity division. It donates products and game tickets to children and non-profit organizations.

Miami Heat

The club was founded in 1988. Its headquarters are in Miami, and they play for the Eastern Conference. It is one of two teams, along with the Orlando Magic, that represents the state of Florida in the NBA.

With Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O’Neal, the team won its first NBA Championship in 2006 under Riley’s leadership. Four years later, the “Big Three” of Chris Bosh, LeBron James, and Wade led the Heat to four consecutive NBA Finals, claiming the 2012 and 2013 championships.

Houston Rockets

Houston Rockets is a club based in Houston, Texas. It was founded in 1967, with its original headquarters in San Diego. With Hakeem Olajuwon as their premier player, the Rockets won the NBA Finals in 1994. Then, with Clyde Drexler’s addition, they won the Finals in 1995.

While they were with the Houston Rockets, Moses Malone, James Harden, and Olajuwon were each selected as the NBA’s Most Valuable Player.
