Gender roles are very old. Cavemen used to share their daily responsibilities between the genders so that everything would run smoothly in their community. Later, gender roles were a subject of dispute, great social changes, etc.

This quiz will not tell you which gender you should identify with. That’s your job, to figure it out on your own, and taking suggestions on such a delicate subject might not be the best idea. This gender role test will only assign you to masculinity or feminity.

What are Gender Roles?

Gender role has little to do with your genitals, but quite a lot to do with society. It’s a social construct designed to help people understand the world. Just like stereotypes. And by “designed” I don’t mean that some evil people gathered around the fire a few thousand years ago and decided that from now on we’ll use “gender roles”. It was a gradual process, and just like stereotypes, created mostly in our heads. Our brain doesn’t like to work too much, and it prefers to save time and energy wherever it can. That’s why it likes to categorize, well, everything. In that case, it categorized gender.

Gender Roles in The Past

Depending on the typical occupation of men and women within society, people would learn to assign them to genders. In the past, these roles remained mostly unchangeable. It was due to male domination, patriarchy, and some biological reasons. When people used to have to fight for their food, and their safety, and on top of that, to raise future generations, it was quite natural for women to stay at home. They breastfed and were less likely to be physically strong.

Of course, nowadays, things have changed. A woman’s role is no longer only one of the mother. Women can choose between many different things they want to do in their lives, and physical strength does not longer determine being useful to society. There are many other ways to have children and feed them. A woman is no longer trapped in the house.

Gender roles changed many times in the past. For example, nowadays we assign the color pink to girls, but did you know that not that long ago it was the boys’ color? People would dress boys in pink because it was considered normal at the time. Not only did boys wear this particular color, but they also wore dresses. If a boy was born into a noble family, especially if destined to be king in the future, he would be portrayed wearing a pink dress. In the 21st century, we would be very quick to judge this behavior, but times change.

How many Genders are there?

That’s a very tricky question, and the answer cannot be given for sure. It depends, mostly on culture. Some cultures recognize only 2 genders, and that’s the most common option. There are also cultures, that have been sure for ages that there is a 3rd gender. Nowadays, we tend to believe that there are many more genders and the number is constantly changing.

If we go back to considering gender in terms of energy like our ancestors did, we can easily realize that there are two major energies in the world. One of them is masculine and one of them is feminine. Of course, there’s no human being on this planet who is 100% masculine, or 100% feminine. We are all different, and that’s what makes the world interesting.

Each person has their unique percentage of feminine and masculine energy, and this gender role test will help you realize, which is dominant in your case.

Two Genders

As we said before, it’s not true that there are only two genders, at least that’s our state of knowledge for now. But we’d still like to talk a little bit of how we stereotypically define both genders in societies. These are obviously very old-fashioned characteristics, but this gender role personality test must be based on something after all.

Masculinity

In order to be perceived as masculine, people must be very strong physically. Muscles might be what people attracted to masculinity, look for in their potential partners. Faminine creatures like to feel protected, and they believe that a strong man will grant them safety and peace in their lives. And they need it, to breed children and keep them sheltered from the outside world.

A man has to be mature. He cannot let everyone tell him what to do. He needs to be sure that he’s the responsible one here. Maturity manifests in being able to communicate one’s needs, and being open and understanding. Sadly, these are not the first things that come to our minds when we think of masculinity. Nevertheless, this is exactly what a man should be, and what women need him to be.

A man needs to be very decisive. In event of emergency, he’s the one to take responsibility and decide how to approach the problem. Sometimes we even say that the man is the head of the family. He needs to be able to work under pressure, and make everyone feel safe. His personality must be able to convince the others that he’s the one to be trusted.

Feminity

Females are known to be very sensitive. Usually it’s said that this characteristic might not be so good for them, but in the end, someone has to pay attention to people’s feelings. If men are supposed to be strong, women need to be able to recognize people’s emotions. That skill is also very useful when it comes to raising children. These little creatures cannot communicate with world early on, and that’s where the emotional intelligence enters the chat.

Women need to be loving and accepting. They make sure that everyone in the community feels loved and knows what their role is. After all, women raise the children, so they also cultivate all of the gender roles. Women give their children a sense of acceptance they need in their lives. Nowaday we talk a lot about traumas. A lot of them come from our childhood, as you all know. It’s crucial that the person who raises the kids is aware of that and tries their best not to harm the kids in the future.

Last but not least, women need to be beautiful. Historically, women’s intellect never mattered as much as their looks. We are not going to judge wether it’s smart or not, but I bet you already know your answer. Most women in the past were lucky to get away from the gender role cage only because they were beautiful, so they served some purpose to men. Sad but true. Luckily, we don’t have to repeat mistakes of the past in today’s society.
