There are many different genres of movies out there. Let’s talk about some of them – perhaps it will help you choose the right film for your movie night.

The term “genre” dates back to ancient Greek literature. But, for writers, artists, and filmmakers, it is usually the simplest, most practical way to categorize different styles of stories and content. It is worth pointing out that nowadays the movie genres are not the pure movie genres they used to be back in the day. Most movies made today are hybrids of many different genres.

In the early days of cinema, genres were much more uniform and defined. In those days, people used to go to the cinema to watch a musical or a comedy or a war movie. Some of these genres were: action, drama, horror, fantasy, comedy, romance, thriller, and western. Sub-genres were developed to give names and expectations to certain types of films within each genre. For example, the comedy genre could have the romantic comedy or black comedy sub-genre.

In the action genre, most of the content of the film must be action-oriented, including fight scenes, car chases, stunts, and the like. It is also one of the best examples of the evolution of our cinematic hero’s journey and the classic hero vs. villain narratives. A disaster movie is one of the popular sub-genres of the action genre.

The comedy genre is defined by events that are intended to make someone laugh. Elements of comedy can be found in many movies, however, if the majority of the film is intended to be a comedy, it belongs in the genre. Slapstick comedy is one of the classic sub-genres and is defined by humor derived from physical movement, harm, or frustration that does not have a lot of dialogue if any.

The horror genre is focused on depicting terrifying or macabre events for the sake of entertainment. The best horror movies are designed to get the heart pumping and to show us a glimpse of the unknown. There have been some discussions in the film buffs community on the blurry line between horror and thriller. Sometimes it can be hard to tell if a movie is a thriller or a horror. One way to look at it is that a thriller might tease the possibility of a terrible event, whereas a horror film will deliver throughout the film.

There are many sub-genres of horror, for example, the monster movie which uses a deformed or supernatural creature or set of creatures, to introduce elements of horror. The popular sub-genre is also the ghost movie, which utilizes the frightening power of a spirit or soul of a deceased creature.

The romance genre is defined by intimate relationships of all sorts. The general idea is to lean on the natural conflict that comes from pursuing love and intimacy.

The animation genre is defined by inanimate objects being manipulated to appear as though they are living. This can be done in many different ways and can incorporate various genres and sub-genres. An animated movie can be a comedy, a drama, or even a horror.

Traditional animation is defined by hand-drawn and painted images that are assembled to animate a cartoon that tells a story. Stop motion animation, on the other hand, is defined as taking real objects and adjusting them frame by frame to simulate motion and emotion.

The drama genre is defined by conflict and often looks to reality rather than sensationalism. Emotions and intense situations are the focus, but where other genres might use unique or exciting moments to create a feeling, movies in the drama genre focus on common occurrences.

Drama is a very broad genre with many different sub-genres. For example, melodrama prioritizes dramatization over character. The events presented in the movie are intended to provoke an intense emotional response. The teen drama focuses on the lives of teenagers, their issues, group dynamics, and general struggles of this part of life. The political-drama sub-genre focuses on the complications and inherent drama that takes place inside the world of politics. This can range anywhere from local government to national political climates.
