Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry consists of four houses. Each house has a noble origin and rich history. It’s not fair to admit that a certain house is better than the other, as all of them produced remarkable witches and wizards. Gryffindor excels in different arts than Slytherin, and Ravenclaw has the strengths which Hufflepuff lacks. As in a real world university, being a student in a certain community has its perks and drawbacks.
Founded by Godric Gryffindor, the House of Gryffindor is the most recognizable house in the Harry Potter series. Three of its main characters – Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley – were placed in this house. Gryffindor represents such values as courage, determination, selflessness, chivalry, and tenacity. The symbol of Gryffindor is the golden lion on a scarlet background.
Wanna learn what type of person you are? Take this test and find out which of the four unique personalities best matches your character.
Gryffindor is known for its rivalry with Slytherin which goes back to the time of its founders, Godric Gryffindor and Salazar Slytherin, who had a falling out over the matter of blood purity. Most of the time, the two other houses, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff, sided with Gryffindor against Slytherin.
Therefore, in order not to write about the obvious, we will present the story of the first Gryffindor. Godric Gryffindor, one of the founders of Hogwarts, who stipulated that all wizards, not just pure-blooded ones, could attend his school. Because of this, he quarreled with his friend Salazar Slytherin. What else do you know about Godric? Probably not much, and he is a very interesting character.
Godric set up a House under his name and decided to accept students who were brave like him. The founding of Hogwarts took place in the early Middle Ages, so it was a time of chivalry, in which values such as bravery and courage were highly valued.
Godric did not condone cowardice, going easy or cheating. He was a proud man who wanted to make the Wizarding World a better place. He was the one who came up with the idea for the Sorting Hat, so this magical item was considered Godric’s property. In addition, as befits a true magical knight, Godric also owned a sword.
The sword of Gryffindor we know well from the Harry Potter series, very main character served. Therefore, it can be assumed that Godric always supported Harry in spirit and unsulliedly helped him deal with Voldemort. For only a true Gryphon could take this sword out of the Sorting Hat, and Harry succeeded in doing so for the first time when it came to fighting Basilisk. This sword was also used to destroy Horcruxes.
So Godric with Salazar fought for the values of Hogwarts even after death. Harry represented Godric’s values, while Tom Riddle was from Slytherin and believed in the pure blood of wizards. Even years later, these disputes continued, but of course justice prevailed and Godric could celebrate victory once again.
Based on these stories, it is easy to see what Gryffindor represents. Gryffindors value the valiant defense of their values and desire to dispense justice. They will always fight for important causes. In our world, they would be idealists who are not afraid to act to make the world a better place. Is this what you follow in life?
Finally, we have one more interesting fact about Godric Gryffindor. The author of the novel, J.K. Rowling, once said that Godric could constantly be present at Hogwarts, even during Harry Potter’s teaching days. How is this possible? There are speculations that Godric was an animagus and turned into a Kraken, which can live for many years. He positioned himself comfortably in a lake near Hogwarts and there watched the doings of the new Gryffindors.
Slytherin is another famous house in Hogwarts, best known for its rivalry with Gryffindor students. It was founded by Salazar Slytherin who instructed the Sorting Hat to choose students who manifest cunning, ambition, resourcefulness, and leadership. The House of Slytherin is known for establishing cliques within itself. Students of such tend to pick leaders and carry out their commands. The most famous Slytherin gangs are Death Eaters, Pansy Parkinson’s gang, Merula Snyde’s gang, and Draco Malfoy’s gang.
The emblem of Slytherin is a silver snake on a green background. Some perceive Slytherin as the opposite of Gryffindor. But is that really the case? After all, founder Salazar Slytherin was once friends with Godric. The only thing that divided them was their opinion on pure blood. What do you think, if this problem didn’t exist, maybe Harry and Draco could also be friends?
Just as we looked at Godric’s biography, we will also devote time to Salazar. It is known about him that he knew Parseltongue, the language of snakes, which Harry could also speak. It was a rare skill, so it was suspected that Harry might be his ancestor. Salazar valued ambition, cleverness and cunning. He himself was a model of these qualities. In the end, even after he quarreled with the other founders of Hogwarts and left it, he did not give up.
He continued to stand up for his beliefs, which is why he cleverly returned in secret. He then created the Chamber of Secrets, in which he placed the basilisk. It was to bring about the realization of Salazar’s plans to cleanse Hogwarts of impure blood. His plan was continued by Tom Riddle, but in the end he failed to accomplish his goal. Just as Godric had a sword, Salazar had his medallion with the image of a snake.
It was made of gold and set with emeralds. It was passed down to Salazar’s ancestors from generation to generation. One of the Gaunt ancestors needed money, so the medallion was sold and passed from hand to hand, until it finally went to Voldemort, who made it a Horcrux. Another of Salazar’s magical items was his wand, also passed down to each member of the family.
However, this item was stolen and ended up in the Ilvermorny school of magic. Due to various coincidences, the wand was buried near the school, and a tree with magical properties grew in its place. As you can see, the stories related to Salazar are intricate and complicated like himself.
Ravenclaw is among two less known houses in the Harry Potter series. It was founded by Rowena Ravenclaw, a medieval witch. Students of this house represent such traits as wisdom, learning, and wit. Those who are part of this community value research, and are eager to expand their knowledge about the world.
When it comes to academic results, no other house is as competitive as Ravenclaw. Its students are known to sabotage each other and students from the other houses to get to the top. However, they do not seem to be interested in rivalry which goes beyond the academic realm.
Ravenclaw’s symbol is a bronze eagle on a blue background. As we mentioned, Houses such as Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff tend to be less well known, but today we will give them enough attention. If you are curious about them, be sure to read about the history of Ravenclaw House and its founder. From the Harry Potter series, we know that Ravenclaw included Cho Chang and Luna Lovegood.
The founder, on the other hand, was Rowena Ravenclaw. Do you know anything about this character? Today we will introduce you to her story. She is one of the female founders of Hogwarts. For her, the most important thing was wisdom and intelligence, and it was precisely such students that she accepted into her House. Rowena was born in Scotland.
The theory goes that it was Rowena who chose the location and the name of Hogwarts. Rowena had a daughter, Helena, who also taught at Hogwarts. Their relationship unfortunately ended tragically. Helena at one point stole her mother’s magic item, the Diadem. After which she fled all the way to Albania. Rowena was distraught over her daughter’s escape, so she sent the Bloody Baron to bring her daughter back.
The Bloody Baron was in love with Helena, so he accepted the challenge. However, everything went wrong. When he found her, Helena refused to return, and the Baron, in a fit of rage, murdered the girl and then took his own life. At the time, Rowena’s mother was ill with a fatal disease and could not bear the news of her daughter’s death. She died through a broken heart, and so their story ended.
To this day, Helena known as the Gray Lady and the Bloody Baron are ghosts at Hogwarts. You may remember this story from when Harry was searching for the Ravenclaw Diadem, which was also a Horcrux. That’s why it’s also worth taking a look at its personality.
It is obvious that Rowena was an intelligent woman. However, not everyone knows that she gave the impression of being strict and rule-abiding. It can be said that she was similar to Hermione. That’s why Sorting Hat considered putting her in Ravenclaw, but Hermione had to play a pivotal role in Gryffindor. Rowena also refused to admit to anyone that her own daughter had stolen her diadem. She was very secretive and distrustful, even of her friend Helga Hufflepuff.
Ravenclaw students can be like that, too. Focusing primarily on wisdom and intelligence. Their knowledge of the world makes them more cautious and considerate. Is this a good fit for you?
Hufflepuff is another house in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It was founded by Helga Hufflepuff, a medieval witch. The values most significant for Hufflepuff include patience, loyalty, hard work, dedication, and fair play.
Hufflepuff is sometimes perceived as the weakest house in Hogwarts. Its founder, Helga Hufflepuff, had a policy to invite everyone to the house, no matter their talent. This created a misunderstanding that it’s full of unskillful wizards and witches. What is true though, is that it produced an exceptional number of great individuals who had a considerable impact on the wizarding world. So this House deserves special attention.
The Hufflepuff’s emblem is white and black badger on a yellow background. Cedric Diggory and Nymphadora Tonks were assigned to this House. The dormitory of this House was the only one not visited by Harry Potter, so there was not much information about it. Currently, we can learn that the dormitory was located in the basement of Hogwarts, and its interior resembled the inside of a barrel. Despite the fact that the room was located in the basement, it was always bright and cozy.
This description of the dormitory can well represent the character of Hufflepuff. But as with the other Houses, let’s also look at the biography of the founder. Helga was originally from Wales. Helga Hufflepuff was guided primarily by kindness. She refused to categorize her students. She said she would accept them all. So she was tolerant and valued individuality.
However, she did not accept laziness and wanted her students to show effort. Few people know that Helga was interested in gastronomy and once published a cookbook with her own recipes. Her magic object was the Cup. This item, like any other, became Voldemort’s Horcrux. Besides, Helga was considered a very friendly and hard-working woman. Her positive attitude to the world made everyone feel better. Many of the delicacies eaten by Hogwarts students at feasts came from her recipes.

The Sorting Hat
The Sorting Hat is one of the most intriguing and unique entities in the Harry Potter universe. It’s a sentient being with a witty and wise personality. The hat belonged to Godric Gryffindor, one of the founders of Hogwarts. It could usually be found in the Headmaster’s office. The Sorting Hat is the one who decides which house a first year student would be assigned to. It must decide if Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, or Hufflepuff is the best fit for a student.
The Sorting Hat would never admit that it made a mistake. Its decision is final. Even though there were some occasions when Slytherin exhibited altruism, or Gryffindor resorted to cowardice, the witty hat was always sure of his choice.
Apart from its main job, it was also quite a performer. At the beginning of each term, it sang an original song. It was also known for its sense of humor and great memory.
