The Great Schism – Overview

The Great Schism, also known as Schism 1054, and East-West Schism is a historical event which resulted in a separation of the branches of the Christian church. The breaking point of the schism took place on July 16, 1054 when Michael Cerularius, Patriarch of Constantinople was excommunicated from the Christian church. This event overflowed the cup of bitterness, causing the creation of two biggest denominations in the history of Christianity – the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Western Roman Catholic Church.

Do you wonder how smart you really are? If you are not afraid to learn the answer, try solving this honest test!

Even before Cerularius excommunicated, there were many tensions between Rome and Byzantine. Not only they had different views on theological matters, there were several political conflicts between the church branches. One of the differences concerned the use of unleavened bread during the sacrament of communion. The Western church approved the practice while the Eastern opposed it. Another major bone of contention were the features of the Holy Spirit. According to the Western church’s doctrine’ the right procession of the Holy Spirit is from God and Jesus Christ. The Eastern church, however, rejects the procession from Jesus Christ (Son) and accepts only the procession from God (Father).Β

Political Conflicts

The differences between the churches were also caused by political tensions, especially regarding Rome. Rome argued that the pope as a leader of the church should have control over the patriarch who led the eastern church. Constantinople was not eager to adopt this idea. Because of that, there were two religious leaders, one for the western (pope) and one for the eastern church (patriarch).Β

Growing tensions between the churches caused waves of excommunications. After Rome excommunicated patriarch Michael Cerularius and the entirety of the eastern church, Constantinople retaliated by excommunicating Leo III, Roman people and the Roman church.

Relations Between The Churches

The Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church never managed to reunite. With time, the tensions between Rome and Constantinople faded away, allowing both sides to agree to more peaceful terms. Almost a thousand years later, in 1965, Patriarch Athenagoras and Pope Paul VI annulled the excommunication decrees of their churches.

The two denominations exist to this day. They are the largest Christian communities in the world, consisting of over a billion followers. The Roman Catholic Church remains as the biggest denomination with more than one billion Christians around the world. The Eastern Orthodox Church is the second, with approximately 260 million followers. Despite their turbulent past, the two churches continue to promote their different dogmas in peace.Β

As a way to keep peaceful relations, the two sides send delegations each year to take part in each other’s celebrations – Saint Paul and Saint Peter for Rome (29 July) and Saint Andrew for Constantinople (30 November). Unfortunately, the reconciliation attempts are harshly criticized by some conservative members of the Orthodox church.
