One could think we all have at least some common sense. Is that true, however? When you think about it, you’ve probably met some people who didn’t seem to have an abundance of common sense. But how much common sense do you have? You can check it today with one simple test.

What even is common sense? Let’s see the definition. It can vary slightly, depending on the source. According to the Mirriam-Webster dictionary, common sense is a sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts. (Prudent in that context means intelligent, marked by wisdom, discreet).

In simpler words, common sense is the ability to make judgments free from errors, based on practical knowledge and reasonable perception of a situation. People develop this ability through life experiences, though some say it’s a natural skill. People with common sense are perceived as sensible, down-to-earth, trustworthy, and practical.

If you’re driving a car and someone jumps in front of it, common sense tells you to hit the brakes. On the other hand, a person stopping to check their phone in the middle of a busy street most likely lacks common sense.

Why might someone lack that particular ability? There are different types of intelligence, and we can’t excel in all of them. A person with a stellar academic record and an impressive knowledge of certain subjects might not be able to find their way in a strange city.

Some people are better at predicting the consequences of their actions than others. Not all of us consider the possible outcomes of what we do. For example, putting a scalding hot drink on the edge of the table near children playing can be very risky for one person. Another person will not think about the possible negative consequences of that action.

Sometimes it depends on one’s perspective. Some people see a night of partying and drinking as reckless, irresponsible, and unhealthy. However, a young college student going out sees it as something positive. For them, a night out is a chance to bond with their friends and have fun while they’re still young and don’t have that many responsibilities. Common sense for them is to go out and party when they still can.

Some people are better at advising than following their advice themselves. A doctor can instruct their patient to quit smoking, yet they smoke themselves, even though they know very well how unhealthy it is. A person can advise their friend to end their toxic relationship while staying with their own lousy partner. We all lack common sense sometimes because we are human and make mistakes.

A person can be considered lacking in common sense when they continue to do something, even though there is evidence doing that thing is not beneficial. It’s not easy to get out of deeply ingrained ways of thinking. An example of that can be an older individual giving out parenting advice that is outdated and maybe even harmful. However, they used to do it all the time for their children, so it’s hard now to change their beliefs. On the flip side, a person who is set in their ways may deem others to have no common sense because they cannot understand new ways of doing things or new ideas.

There are some things you can consider to help you acquire common sense. When you have to make a decision, consider all the risks and rewards that come with it. Making choices where the risks outweigh the benefits rather than the other way around will almost certainly provide satisfying outcomes.

Don’t stick stubbornly to what you’ve learned. It’s good to be skeptical and self-critical sometimes. Remember that anyone can be wrong or make a mistake, you included. There will be times in your life when you need to reevaluate your beliefs and perhaps change them. It’s not an easy task, but it will help you in the long run.

Don’t forget to take into account other people’s views. That way you will be able to make decisions that are respectful and beneficial for others, not just for you.

Sometimes, the best course of action is to wait. If you find yourself unable to make a choice, take a pause and gather more information or ask for advice. Proceed when you feel confident about what to do. Don’t act impulsive or make abrupt decisions.

In certain cases, going with what your intuition tells you will be the most beneficial choice. Stop overthinking and start listening to your gut. For example, if you feel uncomfortable around a new person, pay attention to that feeling. It might be telling you something.
