Christmas’ Origins

Christmas is a festival celebrated each year on December 25th. It commemorates the birth of Christ and is accepted as a public holiday in most countries in the world. It is a religious and cultural phenomena observed for two thousand years. Even though Christmas consists of religious traditions and secular practices, the birth of Jesus Christ, religious leader from Nazareth, is the most important part of the annual celebrations for its followers. However, depending on the country, the nature of the commemoration can lean more to the spiritual aspect or be entirely secular.

The reason why Christmas takes place in winter is crucial to understand its origins. Long before Jesus Christ was even born, celebration of winter solstice was a common occurrence among many nations throughout the world. It was a joyful time full of hope and festive mood. When the worst period of an unforgiving winter season was over, many breathed a sigh of relief and looked forward to the brighter future. Brighter indeed, as it also meant shorter nights and extended hours of sunlight. It was a perfect time for celebrations in many European countries.

Saturnalia

One of the most known celebrations of the winter solstice was Saturnalia. This annual Roman festival in honor of the god of agriculture, Saturn, had a significant impact on forming the Christmas season we know today. It lasted an entire month and was famous for its feasts and traditions. It was a happy time especially for slaves, who were temporarily freed so they could take part in festivities with everyone else. Everyone was equal during Saturnalia.

Juvenalia

Another Roman festival observed around the winter solstice was Juvenalia. It commemorated Roman children and the birth of Mithra, the god of the sun. This most sacred Roman holiday was celebrated on December 25th, a date we all know very well.

Christmas’ Symbols And Traditions

It wouldn’t be a true Christmas without its traditions and symbolism. Let’s take a look at the most famous symbols and customs that make Christmas such an enjoyable experience.

Christmas Tree

Christmas Tree

Who doesn’t like decorating their home with a beautiful Christmas tree? A pine or fir tree decorated with colorful lights and ornaments is a must-have for the Christmas season. This tradition originated in 16th Germany when Christians started bringing beautifully decorated evergreen trees into their homes.

Santa Claus

Santa Claus

Santa Claus or Father Christmas is a character based on a real person that existed in the 4th century. It was Saint Nicolaus who inspired future generations and contributed to the creation of a white-bearded elder we know today. In today’s depictions, Santa Claus is a jolly and kind character wearing white and red coat and hat with pompom. As Saint Nicolaus did, Santa is bringing gifts to children but the scale of his operation is much bigger. He gives presents to kids all around the world and also takes into consideration all adults. This makes him a very busy man during the Christmas season. Because of that, he has his own toy factories and brigades of little elves who help him in this ambitious task.

Christmas Stocking

Christmas Stocking

Christmas stocking is a tradition to hang empty socks on Christmas Eve so that Santa Claus can fill it with little gifts like toys and candies during his visit. These little gifts are known as stocking fillers or stocking stuffers. It is said that this tradition is inspired from Saint Nicolaus’ life. One legend says that in an attempt to secretly help a certain family, Saint Nicolaus threw three bags of gold through the window. One of them ended up in a stocking and thus started the tradition of Christmas Stocking.

Mistletoe Christmas

Mistletoe Christmas

Another tradition associated with Christmas is Mistletoe kissing. According to the legend, a man is allowed to kiss a woman under a sprig of Mistletoe, and vice versa. If the kiss is not returned, bad luck will befall upon the person who said ‘no’. Origins of this custom are not entirely clear. It was supposedly incorporated into Christmas in 18th century England when it was used as a Christmas tradition. Springs of Mistletoe or Mistletoe circles are definitely a great addition to Christmas decorations.
