As you no doubt know, baseball is a bat and ball game that is played between two teams. The teams take it in turns to bat and field, and there are various positions to be held during the game. You likely have a part of the game you enjoy the most, as does everyone who has ever played baseball. After hitting the ball, you have to run counter-clockwise around the four bases in order to score runs for your teams. Of course, the defensive team is looking to stop you on this journey so that they can be the winners instead. A run is only scored when the runner legally gets around the bases and then touches the home plate where they started. The winner will always be the team that has the most runs at the very end of the game.
The first aim for the batting team is to have their player reach the first base safely. From there, they can try to advance as a runner either during their turn or the next player’s turn. They want to try and not be stopped on this journey, which is often one of the most thrilling parts of the game. The two teams will take it in turns between batting and fielding, and they switch over when the batting team has three outs, which is called an inning. Each game has nine innings, and the winner will be the team who has scored the most runs during this time.
If the teams happen to be in a tie at the end of this time, another inning will be added to find the winner. One thing that is quite different about baseball when compared to other sports is that it doesn’t have a game clock. Most games will end in the ninth inning, but the length of the game will often vary depending on the skill of the players.
Baseball was developed from the old bat and ball games in the mid-18th century, which were being played in England at this time. The game was then brought over to North America by immigrants, and that’s how the modern version of baseball we know and love came to be. At the end of the 19th century, baseball was thought of as the national sport of the United States. However, the game isn’t just popular in the US and is also enjoyed in the Caribbean, Central and South America, and parts of Asia. Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea are particularly passionate about the game and love playing and watching baseball in their free time.
In both the US and Canada, there’s a Major League Baseball league, where teams are split up between the National League and American League. There are three divisions for each one, called East, West, and Central. The champion is determined during the playoffs, which lead to the World Series. Japan also has its own baseball leagues, as does Cuba. There’s even an international competition now, bringing together players from around the world to share their love of the sport.
Baseball has a long and exciting history and is loved by players and spectators of all ages in the US and further afield. With so many years of history to discover, today we’re going to see if you can name some of the top baseball legends of the past century.
