Polyamory And Polyamorous Relationship

Polyamory is an act of having a romantic and intimate relationship with more than one person. Unlike monogamy, when one person forms a relationship with one partner, a polyamorous relationship consists of more than two people. Polyamorous individuals are not satisfied with just one partner which is why they want to share love with multiple partners. Because not many people want to do that, it is challenging to form such a relationship. And there is also an additional challenge. Finding the right person you want to spend the rest of your life is already difficult for monogamous people. The difficulty is multiplied when three or more people look to start a family.

Despite its downsides, there is no lack of people who desire to form a polyamorous relationship. The trend is increasingly popular and is more widely discussed on the Internet. It is also more accepted by society. The public view of polyamory is not as negative as it was in the 90s and 2000s. What is more, the number of proponents of polygamous marriages increases each year. It may be just a matter of time before marriages with multiple people are legal in the US and Europe. Out of 195 countries, 58 Asian and African nations recognize polygamy as a legal practice.

Can Polyamorous Relationships Work?

When something doesn’t work for us we look for other ways to satisfy our needs. This applies to all aspects of life, including love. Monogamous relationships just don’t feel right to some people. Because they are unable to feel what they desire, they give polyamorous relationships a try. It is just that simple. There is no reason to believe that it is impossible and doomed to fail. As long as there are people willing to give it a try, they are going to succeed in creating polyamorous relationships. But despite all that, a lot of people argue that it never works and is going to fall apart sooner rather than later.

This pessimistic view is based on people’s fear of something new and uncommon. The fact that most people only experienced monogamous love reinforces their viewpoint even further. However, as the number of polyamorous relationships increases, more and more opponents of polyamory are going to change their mind.

4 Types Of Polyamorous Relationships

Not all polyamorous relationships are the same. Depending on how love and emotional bonds are manifested, they can be divided into four different types.

  • Solo polyamory occurs when people don’t have primary relationships but date multiple people. They wish to remain independent and not commit to a relationship. They may live without their partners and prefer to not share finances between each other.
  • Polyfidelity describes a group of three or more people who formed a relationship with each other and don’t want to date outside of their group. In this non-monogamy structure all partners are all equals and have the same power over important decisions. Sexual and romantic activity is restricted to this group.
  • Hierarchical polyamory refers to people who are committed to more than one relationship. They have a primary relationship which is the most important to them but also secondary and tertiary relationships to which they devote less time and commitment. In hierarchical polyamory, the primary partner takes initiative more often when it comes to making decisions.
  • Non-hierarchical polyamory is the opposite of hierarchical polyamory. In this non-monogamy structure hierarchy of partners is not respected. Each member of the group receives the same amount of attention and time. What is more, opinions of all partners are equally respected when there is an important matter to settle. Because of this, non-hierarchical polyamory is also known as relationship anarchy or egalitarian polyamory.
