Hi there everyone! Have you ever wondered how narcissistic are you? By completing this quiz, you can find the answer to this question. Before we do that, however, we need to consider what it means.
Narcissism is a personality type that characterizes people placing themselves at the center of the universe. Their own needs are most important to them, and they devote an unhealthy amount of time to them. It is natural for people to be selfish and proud to some extent. So you can measure each of us on a narcissism scale because we all have these characteristics.
Healthy narcissism is a necessary part of good self-esteem. So it is associated with good mental health. Unfortunately, many people struggle with its unhealthy levels. Then it becomes destructive. It is characterized by feelings of entitlement and superiority, arrogant or haughty behaviors, and a generalized lack of empathy and concern for others. On a spectrum, destructive narcissism is more extreme than a healthy type but not as extreme as the pathological condition. The pathological condition is a magnified, extreme manifestation of healthy narcissism. It can be seen as an inability to love others, a lack of empathy, emptiness, boredom, and an unremitting need to search for power while making the person unavailable to others.
Some people love themselves so much that they ignore the needs of others. Narcissists daily lower the importance of others and their feelings. They don’t understand the effect their behavior has on other people. Interestingly, such people are often charismatic and charming. Often, the narcissism that characterizes them is not immediately apparent. They like to surround themselves with people who feed into their egos. They build relationships to reinforce their ideas about themselves, even if these relationships are superficial.
There are actually two types of narcissism. The first is Grandiose Narcissism. This type can develop in someone treated as superior to others as a child. These values are often passed on to the adult life of such a person. Then they still have expectations to be treated better. As a result, they often show aggression, a will to dominate, and exaggerate their importance. People with Grandiose Narcissism are very self-confident and show no sensitivity. They badly need admiration and often use others to achieve their goals.
The second type of narcissism is Vulnerable Narcissism. This can develop in a person who has been beaten, sexually abused, or otherwise abused as a child. People with this personality are much more sensitive. Narcissistic behavior helps them protect themselves against feelings of inadequacy. Even though they go between feeling inferior and superior to others, they feel offended or anxious when others don’t treat them as if they’re special. Vulnerable Narcissism can be recognized by the fact that someone cannot maintain appropriate relationships with others, even despite having a large group of friends and relatives, due to their self-absorbed nature. People who struggle with it need attention very much, and in a relationship, they rarely give but only take.
And where does the name of this phenomenon actually come from? The name comes from Greek mythology. What does this myth sound like? Let’s see… Once upon a time, there was a young man named Narcissus. All the nymphs knew him because he walked in the forests and mountains every day. And he was so beautiful that they all loved him. But he didn’t even look at them. He only loved hunting and didn’t want to hear of any other love. But once he leaned over the stream to drink some water, he saw his own reflection in the clear water. He was amazed at his beauty and fell in love with himself. He forgot about the whole world, staring at the water mirror. In the end, he died of vain longing, and when he was laid on the ground, a flower grew on the grave with white petals and a golden heart, which was called – a narcissus.
What if someone is unable to function normally because of this type of personality? That’s when they’re probably struggling with a narcissistic personality disorder. How can you know it? People with NPD may be generally unhappy and disappointed when they’re not given the praise or special favors they believe they deserve. Others may see them as snobbish and conceited, and may not enjoy being around them. To talk about the disorder, these symptoms must be happening to an extent that reduces the quality of life. This disorder can cause problems in many areas of life such as work, school, and relationships. However, you can manage many of the effects with therapy. We also encourage all those who are going through a difficult time to do so.
