Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady, and Steven Molaro are the creators of the American television comedy The Big Bang Theory. They both worked as the show’s chief writers and executive producers. After airing 279 episodes over 12 seasons, it had its CBS premiere on September 24, 2007, and it ended on May 16, 2019.

Chuck Lorre Productions and Warner Bros. Television created the program, which was shot live in front of an audience. In its first season, it garnered a variety of evaluations, but in the 2nd and 3rd seasons, the reaction was more positive. Despite initially receiving mixed reviews, seven of the eleven seasons were among the top 10 in the final season rating, and it eventually won the top slot.
Between 2011 through 2014, it received nominations for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series, and Parsons won the award four times for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. It garnered 46 nominations and seven Emmy Awards in all. Young Sheldon, a prequel series based on the Sheldon Cooper character played by Parsons in the original series, debuted in 2017 and is currently airing on CBS.

On September 24, 2007, the show’s debut episode aired. For the show, a second pilot was created. The 2006–2007 television season saw the production of a different pilot, however, it was never shown. The initial, unaired pilot had a different framework than the way the show is currently structured.
Sheldon, who is named after Sheldon Leonard, a well-known personality in episodic television as a producer, director, and actor, was the only key character to remain in both pilots along with Leonard. Both of the pilots’ opening scenes had a small role played by Althea, which was mostly left intact.

Katie, “a street-hardened, tough-as-nails lady with a fragile interior,” and Gilda, a scientific colleague, and friend of the male protagonists, were the two female lead characters in the initial pilot. Katie meets Sheldon and Leonard after breaking up with a partner, and they extend an invitation for her to move in with them. Katie’s presence endangers Gilda. The test audiences didn’t like Katie, but they did enjoy Sheldon and Leonard. The theme tune for the original pilot was “She Blinded Me with Science,” a hit by Thomas Dolby.

Even though the first pilot wasn’t picked up, its makers were permitted to remake it and create a second pilot. They enlisted the rest of the cast and changed the format of the program. Penny was put in Katie’s place. Although it has never been formally published, the original unreleased pilot has been making the rounds online.

Regarding the show’s development, Chuck Lorre said: “We produced the “Big Bang Pilot” approximately two and a half years ago, and while it sucked, Johnny and Jim stood out as two extraordinary things that worked well. After a complete rewrite, we were fortunate to have Kaley, Simon, and Kunal.” When asked if the original pilot will ever be released on DVD, Lorre responded, “That would be amazing, I must say. We’ll find out. Display your mistakes”

James Burrows, who was no longer directing The Big Bang Theory, was responsible for both of the show’s pilot episodes. On May 14, 2007, CBS ordered 13 episodes in response to the revised second pilot. The opening sequence was made available on iTunes without charge before it aired on CBS. On October 19, 2007, a whole 22-episode season of the program was ordered after its September 24 launch.
The program is created by Warner Bros. Television and Chuck Lorre Productions, and it is taped in the presence of a live audience. A brief sitcom called Welcome to The Captain briefly replaced the program on February 4, 2008, almost three months later. There were only 17 episodes created for the first season, which concluded on Mar 17, 2008, in an early time slot.

The program was renewed for a second season following the end of the strike, which began broadcasting on September 22, 2008, during the 2008–2009 season. The program was given a two-year extension until the 2010–11 term in 2009 due to rising ratings. In 2011, the show received a three-season renewal.

The Big Bang Theory stars Johnny Galecki, Sara Gilbert, Laurie Metcalf, and Meagen Fay, all of whom were co-stars in the comedy Roseanne. Lorre also contributed as a writer to the show for several seasons.
