Race is a way to differentiate people based on their physical appearance and behavioral features. It is a classification that takes into consideration biological differences between people. Even though ‘race’ is a cultural construct, it wouldn’t come to existence if not for visible superficial differences between groups of people.
Referring to certain groups of people as ‘races’ was first commonly used in the 1500s. However, it wasn’t based on visible physical traits but kinship relations which included various kinds of people.

It wasn’t until the 17th century, when the modern meaning of ‘race’ emerged. Since then it was referring to visible physical traits of humans. In the United States it was a classification method which took into account such features as skin color, eye formation, skin texture, and hair characteristics. Differences in human appearance were correlated with geographical location. That’s why ‘African race’, ‘European race’, or ‘Asian race’ were used in a common language.
Other races also emerged thanks to linguistics and religion. Groups of people whose common denomination were language or beliefs were then classified as, for instance, ‘Jewish race’, ‘Arab race’, or ‘Chinese race’.

Even though a lot of people still think of races as populations of people who have distinct physical features, the research from the 20th century demonstrated that the concept of a ‘race’ is not without its flaws. The racial model actually fails to make a meaningful differentiation between groups of people. The genetic difference between people gets no higher than 1%. This means that there are much more similarities than there are differences between any two humans. This leads to an interesting observation: any prejudice or hostility we manifest towards other races is based on a measly 1% of a genetic code. And in many cases it’s even less than that.
It was concluded by modern science that the idea of race has no biological validity. Thanks to the advancements in anthropology and history, races are now perceived more in the context of culture than biology. It is still quite a new social phenomenon in human history.
Do you bear any prejudice against some human races? Solve our Racism Test and find out how tolerant you are.
One of the negative consequences of the emergence of racial models is an attempt to divide people into more and less intelligent groups. Some people still have a false conviction that some races are inherently less capable to do certain things than other races. Even though this pointview has no basis in science, it is prevalent in society to some degree, especially among older generations who tend to be less tolerant than Millennials or Gen Z.
According to anthropometric measurements, there is no reason to believe that some groups of people are cognitively superior to other groups. Such data simply doesn’t exist. One could argue though, that there is indeed some evidence to support such a claim and it can be found in IQ test results.
It is true that there are differences in IQ scores measured between races. However, IQ-based research doesn’t provide any correlation with the biological constitution of studied groups of people. It also doesn’t take into account the health and education status of given individuals. Some people who are clustered in a group defined as ‘race’ could simply have more opportunities to unleash their cognitive potential which is pretty much the same among humans. What makes a difference are environmental factors, impacting what we learn and how we develop our brains.
Whether it’s black, white, or asian children, their results of intelligence tests don’t vary in any significant way if their status in a society is similar. Because science ruled out biological factors, we must take a look at social phenomena. Whenever we observe inequalities between races or just groups of people, no matter their physical features, this is where answers can be found.
