What Does It Means To Be Black?

So what features one does need to possess to be called ‘black’? Black refers to the people who have African ancestry and dark color of skin. On the other hand, African American refers to the people who have African ancestry and were also born in the United States. However, these two terms are often used interchangeably.

Black People – African Origins

African American people belong to one of the most numerous ethnic groups in the United States. Most of them have African ancestry but there are also many black people who have non-black ancestors. However, they are mostly descendants of Africans who were brought to the New World by force.

After black people were captured during African raids or wars, they were sold and moved to America which was allowed by Atlantic slave trade. They belonged to many ethnic African groups which are ancestors of today’s African American people. Most of the enslaved Africans lived in Central and Western Africa. Inhabitants of Eastern and Southeastern Africa were also captured and enslaved but in lesser numbers than in other African regions. Ethnic groups that the African people belonged to included Igbo, Mandé, Akan Wolof, Yoruba Fon, Makua, and Bakongo, among others.

The enslaved community of African people played a big role in developing the United States economy. However, as a people with very limited freedoms, their contributions were done unwillingly and were often rewarded very poorly.

They were also responsible for the development of Southern folklore, speech, dancing, food, and music. What is also worth mentioning is that the blending of cultural features of African customs with European ones is attributed to African Americans.

African Americans In The 17th And 18th Century

In the 17th and 18th century slavery was a common practice in the South. Africans and African Americans who were born in the New World worked on rice, indigo and tobacco plantations in the South. Even though southern businessmans made a huge profit from trading slaves and their plantations, slavery never became common in the northern regions.

The 18th century was also the time when the first African martyr died to the cause of American independence. Crispus Attucks was a former slave, who was killed in 1770 in the Boston Massacre. Following this event, some black people were conscripted to the army to fight on the American side, like 5000 African soldiers who took part in the American Revolution. After the insurrection ended, some of the black soldiers were freed and the slavery became illegal in the northern regions. However, the ratification of the Constitution of the United States in 1788 made that slavery become more widespread than ever before in the South.

The Fight For Civil Rights

Even after World War II, racism was still prominent among the people of North America. It was then that black people started creating movements which aimed to gain more freedoms and rights for Africans and African Americans. The initiative was referred to as the freedom movement or civil rights movement. The plan was executed in the 1940s in 50s and achieved many successes. National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), achieved significant victories in courts, attacking segregation in transportation, discrimination in recreational facilities, and restrictive covenants in housing.

One of the most significant rulings issued by the Supreme Court came into effect in 1954. It outlawed segregation in public schools and abolished the ‘separate but equal’ ruling of the Plessy v. Ferguson case. This decision was met with resistance in the southern regions where white citizens used economic pressure, legal maneuvers and even resorted to violence. One of such events took place in 1957, during which riots consisting of white mobs caused Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas to temporarily close. The reason for the riots was the admittance of nine black people to the school. In order to protect the students, Pres. Dwight D. Eisenhower dispatched federal troops to the school’s precinct.
