Every person is different, but arguably we could categorize even the most unique personalities into certain archetypes. Psychiatrist Carl Jung created 12 archetypes representing universal patterns that are part of our collective unconscious. According to him, they were an archaic form of inherent human knowledge passed down to us from our ancestors. Who Am I?

Jung suggested that people experience the world using four main psychological functions: sensation, intuition, feeling, and thinking. Katharine Briggs and her daughter Isabel Myers expanded upon Jung’s work, proposing four dichotomies:

These broad categories are split into 16 possible combinations, typically known as Myers-Briggs types. You might’ve seen them described somewhere and wondered what these mysterious letters mean.
Each letter in a personality type name represents a preference in your way of thinking or behaving.
Who Am I? Introverts draw their energy from being alone or spending time in small groups. They usually are shyer and more thoughtful. Extroverts are energized by spending time with large groups of people and in busy surroundings. They tend to be more unrestrained and straightforward.
S and N stand for Sensing and iNtuition. These categories describe how a person processes information. Sensors focus on their five senses and what they can experience directly (see, hear, feel, etc.). Intuitives are on a conceptual level of thinking and are more interested in ideas and theories.

The Jung and Myers-Briggs categorizations are not the only way to categorize human personalities. We can find relatable character types in places such as Greek mythology. It should come as no surprise because the Greek gods themselves are similar to humans – flawed, passionate, and easily scorned. Also, the word archetype comes from the Greek verb archein (“to begin” or “to rule”) and the noun typos (“type”).
What are the most established archetypes in Greek mythology? The first one is The Ruler, represented by Zeus. He is the god of the sky, lightning, and thunder, governing over all the other gods on Mount Olympus. Zeus answers only to himself and can be dictatorial or cruel due to his unchecked power. However, he can also inspire others to follow where he reads. Zeus is the ultimate authority. Who Am I?
Poseidon is the god of the sea, and he represents The Destroyer archetype. Among the Greek gods, he is considered bad-tempered, passionate, and impulsive. Poseidon tends to lash out in anger and take pleasure in the anguish of others.
Hera, the wife of Zeus, is the goddess of women, marriage, fertility, and childbirth. She defines The Caregiver archetype. She is loyal, caring, and committed even in the face of the most difficult challenges. Like almost every god, Hera also has a vicious streak. Her path in life is being the wife, the mother, and the queen of the gods. She will not tolerate anything that tries to take it away from her.
Aphrodite is the goddess of love and beauty. It’s not surprising in the least that she represents The Lover archetype. Aphrodite embodies all forms of love, including physical, romantic, maternal, spiritual, or platonic. She is passionate, emotional, and pleasure-loving.
What is the level of your emotional intelligence?
Ares is the god of war, and he describes the archetype of The Warrior. Ares is the personification of war’s violent, relentless nature. The Warrior represents those who tend to act first and think later, as well as those who are used to taking what they want by force.

Demeter is the goddess of the harvest, earth’s fertility, and sacred law. She represents The Innocent archetype. Her archetype can be described as honest and angelic, with a delightful and down-to-earth personality. Innocent love, rather than sexual love, rules Demeter’s heart. Demeter, as Mother Nature, is a relationship-oriented, homely and nurturing source of life.
Be honest – do you love your job?
God of fire, volcanoes, blacksmiths, and sculpture. Hephaestus was expelled from Olympus by his fellow Gods, including his own father Zeus. Because of that, his archetype has grown to be known as The Orphan, someone who is rejected and devalued by others in society who are unable to see their true worth.
