Disorders Similar To Depression

Diagnosing depression may not be easy as it seems. There are other mental illnesses which have similar symptoms to major depressive disorder.

One of such disorders is anxiety. It is possible to have both depression and anxiety at the same time. What is more, anxiety can be one of the causes of major depressive disorder. Even though they are two different conditions, they share some symptoms like irritability, nervousness, problems with concentration and sleep.

The second disorder to consider is anemia. Anemia occurs when we have not enough red blood cells to carry oxygen. This results in lowered energy levels, fatigue, exhaustion, and lack of motivation. Untreated anemia may lead to depression.

It’s also worth it to rule out ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). ADHD includes such symptoms as restlessness, difficulty to focus, lack of motivation, and irritability. Even if you were not diagnosed with ADHD in your childhood, it is possible that this condition is manifesting itself during your adulthood. 

Another disorder that may mimic depression is Parkinson. A person suffering from Parkinson’s disease experiences mood swings, slower movements, lack of energy which can also occur in depression.

Depression also shares some symptoms with fibromyalgia which is caused by chemical imbalance in the brain. Similar symptoms include exhaustion, fatigue, muscle pain and mood swings. Untreated fibromyalgia may eventually lead to the development of depression. This condition is easier to rule out as it also causes higher sensitivity to pain and numbness in arms, legs, and hands.
