So what exactly is concussion? Because it causes many different symptoms, this injury can be difficult to understand. It is caused by a bump or jolt to a head or hit to a different part of the body which makes head and brain to quickly move back and forth. During an accident, a brain moves around inside a skull, hitting it and damaging brain cells. What may seem as an innocent bump to a head can result in serious health issues.
This type of injury cannot be assessed based on external damage. It is also not possible to diagnose it using imaging, if the head trauma is mild. Usually, it could be recognized by observing and identifying symptoms which appear after the injury.
What body needs the most after head trauma is a lot of rest. An important step is to reduce activities which require focus and concentration. This includes any form of work that causes mental strain (schoolwork, use of cellphones, video games, TV,). Relaxing speeds up the recovery process. If you stick to the medical advice, the symptoms should decrease and your overall health will get better.
The next step of the treatment plan is physical rest. When you are able to engage in studying or work it doesn’t mean you can resume your physical activities. It is advised to incorporate sport activities gradually, in a stepwise manner. You can start with light exercises which don’t include head impact or contact. If you notice that something increases your symptoms you should cease that activity for the time being.
Remember that ignoring medical advice may slow down your recovery time or make some of your symptoms less tolerable. It can also increase a risk of more serious injuries so you shouldn’t try to ‘tough it out’. Depending on your injury, a medical professional of your choice may give you different rules to follow. It’s all for your safety, make sure to not break them!
