Greek myths were an important part of daily life in ancient Greece. It gave meaning to many aspects of existence. Religious ritual and practices were a common addition to everyday activities, allowing many people to feel connection with higher powers.
Greek myths are not based on a single source. There is no holy book or a singular ancient text of legendary value. Whenever historians try to trace Greek mythology to its roots there is only one answer: oral tradition. The earliest legends and characters were introduced in oral tradition that has its origins in the Bronze Age. The themes, plots, and stories were expanded in the ancient Mediterranean world in the classical and archaic periods of written literature. The expansion was gradual, bearing features of development and growth.

One of the most prominent written sources of myths became ‘The Iliad’ and ‘The Odyssey’ by Homer, the 8th-century BC poet. However, they don’t provide an introduction to any deities, as it is assumed that a reader is already familiar with them.
The first written source that does this job was ‘Theogony’ by the poet Hesigod. The poem was written in 700 BC and consists of genealogies and origins of Greek deities. The model that takes into consideration the very beginnings of the universe is known as cosmogony. Hesigod describes the story of cosmos starting from its creation from the primeval void, known as Chaos or nothingness. It then transforms into being, giving birth to elements, gods and goddesses, children of Chaos. There were four main deities who came to existence this way: Gaia (representing Earth), Tartaros (God of the Underworld), Ouranos (representing Sky), and Pontos (representing Sea).
The very center of Greek myths are male and female deities residing at the top of Mountain Olympus, the highest peak in Greece.
There are also other three deities who are sometimes included in the roster of Olympian gods and goddesses.
There are many more gods and goddesses who are not included in the roster of Olympus deities. What is more, a lot of them established relationships with normal humans, which gave birth to a plethora of half-god heroes.
