What is emotional intelligence?

Generally speaking, intelligence means being able to learn and understand new concepts and apply them to your life. Emotional intelligence is something similar. The ability to handle emotions is crucial for building healthy relationships. Some researchers think emotional intelligence is an inborn ability, but others believe it’s possible to learn it. 

Signs of high EQ

Here are signs of a person with advanced emotional intelligence:

  • recognizing and understanding other people’s emotions
  • being confident and accepting yourself
  • acceptance and embrace of change
  • being curious about other people
  • compassion and concern for others
  • being able to admit to mistakes
  • the ability to control your emotions when things get stressful

According to research, emotional intelligence has four different levels. The first happens when a person can perceive emotions and is aware of verbal and non-verbal cues. The second level is when a person uses emotions to think and react to things.

The next step means that an individual understands emotions and what they mean. The final level is when a person can appropriately handle their emotions. 

Components of emotional intelligence

  • Being self-aware

When you’re self-aware, you can identify and understand your emotions. You know your triggers and what upsets you. You can understand your limits and the patterns of behavior.

  • Knowing how to self-regulate

You don’t let your emotions get the best of you, and you respond to situations rather than just reacting to them. It also suggests that you understand how to de-stress, manage conflict, deal with difficult situations, and adapt to changes in your surroundings.

  • Being motivated

You have an innate motivation to succeed and achieve your goals. You’re inspired to grow as a person.

  • Having empathy

You’re able to empathize with other people. You’re not a judgmental person. You are sympathetic to the struggle of others.

  • Being socially skilled

You know how to handle yourself in a variety of social situations. You know how to lead a conversation, listen carefully to what others are saying, and how make them valued and appreciated.

EQ tests

There are ways to check the level of emotional intelligence. EQ assessments can typically be categorized into self-report tests and ability tests.

Self-report tests allow individuals to respond to questions by rating their behaviors and agreeing or disagreeing with certain statements. These questionnaires are very convenient to use and easy to score. 

Ability tests have people respond to various imagined scenarios. It allows researchers to evaluate the respondents’ ability to recognize, understand, and manage different situations. 

MSCEIT is an ability test created by researchers Mayer, Salovey, and Caruso. It measures emotional intelligence and evaluates respondents in the following areas:

  • recognizing and understanding emotions
  • understanding the effect feelings have on relationships
  • knowing how to use and manage emotions
  • solving emotional problems

ESCI (Emotional and Social Competence Inventory) is a questionnaire built to identify emotional and social traits in people that make great leaders. ESCI can be used to:

  • evaluate emotional intelligence in leading figures
  • increase awareness thanks to effective feedback
  • focus teaching on the most crucial abilities
  • bring out the best characteristics in people

This EQ test measures qualities like the ability to work in a team, keep one’s emotions in check, strive to improve performance, read others’ feelings, use effective persuasive techniques, and negotiate to achieve goals.
