Optimist

An optimist is a person who has a positive attitude toward most things. In every situation an optimist will find some good points. Such people believe in their own abilities and are not afraid of failures. As a result, they achieve their goals more easily and are more liked by others. They take care of their good mood. Sad and unpleasant topics are avoided by them, they prefer not to think about it. They believe in goodness and trust people.

They are usually happy and carefree, and are devoid of jealousy and envy. They are eager to help others. According to an optimist, there are many happy moments in life that we should enjoy and focus on. They are motivated and creative people who appreciate what they have. They are able to see the beauty of this world. They have a lot of hope and goodwill. Optimists tend to be more satisfied with life, live healthier and longer.

But are there any negative aspects of optimism? Unfortunately, yes. Optimists can be naive and trust others too much. Because of this, they can put themselves in danger, because the world is not as wonderful and fair as they think it is.

They also reject negative emotions such as anger, sadness and grief. This is unhealthy, because people need to experience all kinds of emotions, you can’t be happy forever. Because of their positive attitude, they may overlook some important facts, they can’t realistically assess situations or predict risks. Sometimes they lack a deep perspective on important issues, such as social and political problems.

Pessimist

Pessimists are the opposite of optimists. Their approach to most things differs significantly. They are more cautious and more easily see the negative aspects. They try to anticipate every threat. They do not trust people; others have to develop trust in them. Because of their negativism, which may manifest itself in more frequent complaining, criticism and lack of desire, they may be disliked or misunderstood by others.

They have less self-confidence and are sometimes afraid to try new things due to the fact that they may make a mistake. They find it more difficult to solve problems, because then they are under constant stress and focus too much on adversity rather than on solving the problem itself. For them, there is no justice in life, and they generally see the world as bad and dangerous. It happens that pessimists isolate themselves from their surroundings.

They are usually anxious people who have experienced traumas or various situations through which they have lost their sense of security. But they also have a more realistic attitude than optimists. Pessimists are sometimes able to see the good sides, but are fully aware of the bad ones. They know that there are many problems in this world that should be fixed rather than ignored.

So, are you an optimist or a pessimist or realist?

Brain function and causes

You’re probably wondering where it comes from that people are optimistic or pessimistic. First we’ll look at it from a neurobiological perspective. Optimism is related to the activity of the left hemisphere of the brain and the pleasure center. These areas of the brain are responsible for feeling hopeful and anticipating rewards. Dopamine is released there. In contrast, pessimism is associated with the right hemisphere of the brain, the one that focuses on perceiving threats.

But what does all this actually mean? Well, our brain can constantly evolve, so if your approach doesn’t suit you, you can always change it! You can learn to be optimistic or look more realistically if you need to.

Or you can wonder when it happened that you became an optimist or a pessimist. This is influenced by our life experiences. How our parents treated us, what kind of childhood we had, whether we experienced any traumas. All of this has to do with what we think about the world.

If someone had good, caring and loving parents who supported him throughout his life, it is easier for him to be optimistic than for a person who was not so lucky.

Also, financial situation can affect this sense of security – rich people often don’t see the bad sides, because their life is easier and more comfortable, they have never had to face major problems. Of course, not everyone, these are general speculations. So, whether you are an optimist or a pessimist sometimes may not depend on you, but you can unlearn it if you want!

Benefits of being optimistic

According to scientists, it is better and healthier to be an optimist than a pessimist. Optimists are less likely to give up and cope better with problems. For them, life has meaning, and every inconvenience is a challenge. Optimists tend to be happier people, and as a result are more healthy. Also, optimists have an easier life, so it’s worth putting their habits into practice.

Now after this dose of knowledge you are ready to take our quiz! Don’t worry if you turn out to be a pessimist. As we mentioned the approach to life can be changed.
