Zombies are a very popular type of monster featured in games, movies, books, comics, and other kinds of media. They have a very long history, dating back to the beginning of the 19th century. Since that time their popularity rose exponentially, making them a creature that is often included in works of fiction.
Zombies are usually very slow and sluggish monsters. They possess little to no intelligence, which makes them closer to mindless monsters than humans they used to be. Zombies are often portrayed as rotten walking corpses, lacking an arm or having other grave injuries. If a zombie is long dead, the state of its body is going to look much worse.
However, the sluggishness of a zombie can be dangerous. Games like Dead Island and Resident Evil taught us that undead can be very sneaky and elusive. They are approaching slowly but steadily – we turn back and realize there is a walking corpse just an inch behind us, with stretched out arms, ready to attack us.

Fortunately, when it comes to just one zombie, we are not in grave danger. TV series like The Walking Dead and Supernatural tell us that undead monsters are not worthy enemies if they are alone. Lack of intelligence, injuries, and slow movement make a zombie an easy target, not difficult to take care of. However, zombies become significantly more dangerous if there are a lot of them. ‘Strength in numbers’, zombies could say, if they were able to think. We can observe this in movies like World War Z, Zombieland, and I am Legend.

The word ‘zombie’ was probably used for the first time in 1819 by Robert Southey, Brazilian poet. However, it didn’t refer to an undead, rotting monster which rose from its grave. Robert Southey referred to an actual living person, a leader of rebels known as Zumbi. Zumbi dos Palmares led a resistance movement against slavery of Africans in colonial Brazil by the Portuguese. He was also one of the first people to organize a rebellion against slavery of African people.
The meaning of ‘zombie’ that we are looking for can be traced back to Haitian folklore and traditions. According to Haitian legends, someone who is capable of using Voodoo magic can reanimate a dead body. However, how the word ‘zombie’ started to mean a mythological undead monster is not easy to determine. For instance, the first movie that features walking corpses, The Night Of The Living Dead which came out in 1968, does not use the term ‘zombie’ even once. It actually refers to its monsters as ‘ghouls’.
The movie’s director, George Romero used the word ‘zombie’ during interviews about The Night Of The Living Dead. He then included it in the script in another movie, Dawn Of The Dead which was released in 1978. According to Romero, it was because of film critics that ‘zombie’ got associated with living dead featured in his productions. Cahiers du Cinéma, the French magazine, had the largest influence. Eventually, Romero agreed to the term, however remained convinced that ‘zombies’ refer to undead slaves featured in Haitian Voodoo traditions.
