What It Means To Be An Introvert

The terms introvert and extrovert were coined in the 1920s by psychologist Carl Jung. He started using them as a way to differentiate the ways people regain their energy. Introverts recharge energy by being alone, while extroverts seek out other people to take care of their energy needs.

Causes of introversion or extroversion are not yet discovered by scientists. What we know, however, are the differences in neurological constitution of these two personality types. According to researchers, extroverts have lower blood flow to their frontal lobe than introverts do. Frontal lobe is responsible for memory, solving problems, and arranging plans.

Another difference is reaction to dopamine, a neurotransmitter that allows experiencing pleasure and motivation to take action. Even though both personality types have the same amount of this chemical in their bodies, introverts may feel exhausted after the rush of dopamine, while extroverts can remain excited for a longer time.

Introversion And Shyness

The most common myth about introverts is that they are shy people. Contrary to this popular belief, these two phenomena aren’t linked. Introversion qualifies as a personality type, while shyness is defined as an emotion. It may seem that an introverted person is unconfident when they avoid social interactions. But in reality, this is just energy management by that person. Introverts don’t skip social events because they hate people, but because they either spend their energy already, or prefer to be among few friends they trust.

It is true that introverts prefer working behind the scenes rather than being in the center of attention. However, it’s not impossible for them to assume the role of a leader and be in a spotlight. They possess skills to assign tasks to other people, and supervise large projects. Introverts can have qualities to be great leaders. There are many successful CEOs who identify as introverts. This group includes Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Elon Musk, Marissa Mayer, and Mark Zuckerberg.

Another reason why introverts may be perceived as shy is their alleged “unfriendliness”. We can agree that it is harder to create relationships with introverts than extroverts, especially at the beginning. If someone doesn’t want to open up to us despite our efforts, we might make an assumption that this person is shy. But there is always a chance that we might be dealing with an introverted person. In such a scenario, we just need to wait longer than usual, and try to not get angry at our new friend. Friendships and relationships with introverts can be long lasting and very rewarding.
