The Vampires Diaries grabbed the attention of the audience with its intriguing love triangle, handsome vampires, and mysterious supernatural world. Vampires are a fixture in popular culture, and it seems you can never go wrong with them. Let’s talk about some other vampire TV shows out there to get us into a spooky mood.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a classic when it comes to vampire lore. We could never start this list without her! Buffy Summers is not just your regular teenager, even if she tries to. She has unique powers that allow her to fulfill her calling to battle demonic supernatural beings. Buffy has to learn how to balance her Slayer duties with her increasingly complicated personal life. It can be tricky to fight the powers of evil while you’re just trying to be a normal girl. Thankfully, Buffy has friends fighting by her side, with one of them being a witch and the other a vampire cursed with a human soul, Angel.
Speaking of Angel, he got himself a spin-off of the same name, following his struggles as a vampire burdened with a human soul. Throughout the series, Angel fights with his demons and tries to find his path to redemption. He opens a private detective agency in Los Angeles and takes on supernatural cases that other traditional detectives will not touch.
True Blood is based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries novels by Charlene Harris. In this universe, thanks to the synthetic replacement of the real blood, vampires don’t need to hide in the shadows anymore and can live among humans. Some of them believe coexisting with mortals is beneath them, while others think true equality is possible and desirable. The main character of the series is Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress from Lousiana who falls in love with Bill Compton, a vampire. Most of the action takes place in a small town Bon Temps which deals with its fair share of murders, disappearances, and supernatural threats that Sookie and Bill have to handle.
A vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost walk into a bar together…this isn’t the start of a lame joke, but the premise for the show Being Human. Its plot revolves around three supernatural creatures: a vampire, a werewolf, and a female ghost, who are unlikely flatmates. The trio tries desperately to live ordinary lives and blend with humans. Mitchell is a vampire who vowed not to feed on human beings but struggles against his nature. George feels disconnected from his werewolf side, which he sees as something vicious and dangerous. Annie is a ghost who doesn’t know why she’s stuck in the mortal world. Together they simply try to be human. The British version of the show was so successful the American remake followed soon after.
The 2016 TV show Preacher, based on a DC Comics Vertigo series, centers around Jesse Custer, a preacher from a small Texas town with an enigmatic violent past. Jesse re-encounters Tulip O’Hare, an ex-girlfriend who prefers to shoot first and ask questions later and meets Cassidy, a chaotic Irish vampire. Jesse prays to God for a sign that he should continue on his journey with his church. Rather than that, a half-demon, half-angel with a propensity for blowing up those it controls takes over Jesse, bestowing him with enormous power. Following that, Jesse embarks on a journey to solve this mystery and, maybe, find God somewhere along the way.
What We Do in the Shadows, based on the 2014 horror-comedy mockumentary of the same name, follows four vampire roommates as they strive to survive and thrive in modern-day Staten Island. The show begins with Baron Afanas, an ancient vampire from the Old Country, arriving on Staten Island and declaring his desire to rule the entire Western Hemisphere. Although this plan disrupts the vampire roommates’ mostly laidback lifestyles, the group and their familiars attend a city council meeting to persuade officials to hand over New York. From there, a slew of mishaps and misadventures unfold.
