The Hunger Games is a hugely successful dystopian series following a teenager Katniss Everdeen who voluntarily takes her younger sister’s place in the competition to the death. In the Hunger Games, two competitors from each district of the fictional world of Panem have to fight for their survival.
Katniss came from district 12, but do you know a lot about other districts and what they were known for? Let’s learn their names, jobs, and characteristics.
District 1 is known for producing luxury items, such as jewelry for the Capitol. The district is in the Capitol’s good graces because of that. They still have to send their kids out to compete in the Hunger Games like every other district. Typically, the children from district 1 take pride in competing and are often Career tributes – meaning they trained their whole lives to participate in the Hunger Games.
District 1 most likely lies in the vicinity of modern-day Alberta, Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. Since these states are known sources of gemstones, this would explain the district’s main export product – luxury items.
District 2 is located in modern-day Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, and New Mexico, among others. It is one of the wealthiest districts and the biggest supporter of the Capitol. District 2’s industry is masonry and weapon manufacturing. This is also where many Peacekeepers are recruited and trained.
The children of district 2 are Career tributes, trained in combat and survival to compete in the games, which the people of the district consider a great honor.
District 3’s primary industry is technology, as the people there produced televisions, computers, and other electronics. Their tributes are skilled in electronics and engineering. It is also likely one of the most rebellious districts.
District 3’s territory primarily encompasses northern Indiana, northern Illinois, and eastern Iowa, as well as western Wisconsin, southern Minnesota, and northern Missouri.
District 4 specializes in the fishing industry, and its residents are trained for such jobs from an early age. This district tends to produce Career tributes who go into the games willingly.
District 4 is located on the west coast of North America around the former U.S. states of California and Oregon, as well as southern Washington state.
District 5 is responsible for distributing power and electricity to the entire nation. They have a huge hydroelectric dam used for this purpose, which was blown up by district rebels. The district is located fairly close to the Capitol, southwest of it, largely encompassing Arizona and southern Utah.
District 6’s main industry is transportation. It encompasses the territory of modern-day Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Ontario, and Wisconsin.
District 7 supplies Panem with lumber and paper, and its residents are known to be skilled with axes. It is located in the upper northwest region of North America, north of Districts 4 and 1, encompassing eastern Washington, northern Idaho, and Montana, and the southern portions of the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.
District 8 is known for its work in the textiles industry. They have at least one factory responsible for producing the Peacekeepers’ uniforms. It might be one of the most rebellious districts, along with district 3 and district 4. It is located north of District 11, roughly spanning eastern Kansas, Missouri, Tennessee, southern Illinois, and western Kentucky.
District 9 is known for its grain production. The district spans the U.S. states of Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, western Minnesota, and the southern part of the Canadian province of Manitoba.
District 10 is known for the livestock industry, and its job is to provide meat for the Capitol. It is located in the western part of Texas, extending south into northern and central Mexico.
District 11’s industry is agriculture, including the production of fruits, grain, and cotton. Almost everything grown there is shipped to the Capitol, leaving little for the residents. District 11 is one of the poorest districts, and one of the most strictly controlled by the Peacekeepers. It spans eastern Oklahoma, Arkansas, northern Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia.
District 12’s industry is coal. It is one of the poorest districts, if not the poorest of all. This is where Katniss, Peeta, and Gale came from. It is located in the Appalachian Mountains in a region belonging to eastern Kentucky, West Virginia, and southern Ohio.
District 13 was supposedly destroyed by the Capitol during the First Rebellion, but it made a deal to act as an independent nation. Before it seceded, District 13 was known for mining graphite, but its hidden industry was nuclear technology. District 13’s underground facility later became the center of the new rebellion.
