Human Height – Definition

The distance from the bottom of the feet to the top of one’s head while standing erect is known as a height or stature. Height is measured by a stadiometer and is expressed in centimeters (SI system or metric system) and in feet and inches (imperial system or customary units in the United States).

Factors That Impact Height

Poor life conditions and nutrition, low overall quality of life which leads to illnesses can limit human growth. Regions in the world where living standards are poor consist of populations with lower average height than thriving countries. Access to drinkable water and high quality of food is correlated with human growth, which affects one’s final height. Because of that, historians take average height into consideration while studying living conditions in a given region.

It is important to note that height is not a primary component of such studies. Human height is determined mostly by genetics which can be influenced by environmental factors or illnesses (which can also be genetic). Therefore, the well-being of a certain region cannot be evaluated only by focusing on average height.

Environmental Factors

According to scientific estimations, about 80% of human height is determined by genes inherited from the parents. However, which DNA sequences are responsible for growth is not entirely understood. Environmental factors, on the other hand, are easier to identify. On average, they have a 20% chance of affecting an individual’s growth.

How tall people will be in their adulthood is being influenced even before they are born. Fetuses developing in their mother’s womb may have their future height limited by their mother’s lifestyle. If a person is smoking or eating unhealthy food during pregnancy, their child may not be as tall as parents.

Mother’s exposure to hazardous substances and poor diet are not the only factors which impact a child’s height. There are also socioeconomic factors such as education, income, and occupation that come into play. Well-nourished and healthy child is more likely to be as tall or taller than their mom and dad than kids living in poor conditions.

Non-genetic factors also include ethnicity. One’s ancestry may be connected to a region where the average height is lower than that of other places. As we mentioned before, it is related to a region’s quality of life and living standards. However, ethnicity may not always be a reliable factor to consider. Immigration plays a big role while determining average height based on someone’s ancestral roots. According to the study which researched height among American immigrant families, average height may change due to environmental factors. Children of immigrants who grew in the region with better access to food, water, and healthcare can grow taller, despite their ethnicity.

Conclusion

Nutritious food, good healthcare, education, and job opportunities have a substantial impact on the average height of a given population. Even though non-genetic factors proved to affect height, genes still play a much bigger role. Better understanding of growth-related DNA sequences will shed more life on this subject.
