Animals belonging to the mammal class differ from each other in many ways. They vary in appearance and size, but also in lifestyle, behavior, and habitats. These extraordinary creatures are everywhere! They can be found in the icy Arctic, dense rainforests, arid deserts, and the depths of the ocean. Among them are herbivores, carnivores, and those who are not picky eaters, i.e., omnivores.
However, there are also several important characteristics that they have in common. The main one is how they raise their young. Mothers feed their offspring using mammary glands. For a certain period after birth, these animals are therefore very dependent on care in order to survive. Many species from other animal groups do not look after their offspring as intensively as mammals.
Mammals also often have strong social needs, so they form specific communities with a defined hierarchy. For example, wolves form packs, wild boars form herds, and bats form colonies. By acting in groups, they have a better chance of survival. They help each other in obtaining food, protection, and even raising their young. But there are also mammals that lead a solitary lifestyle.
Although we often see ourselves as separate from the animal world, we too belong to the mammal group. We share many characteristics with these creatures.
Humans also care for their offspring in the early stages of life by feeding them breast milk. Like mammals, we also have body hair, which protects against skin irritation and has a heat-insulating function. What’s more, we reproduce in a similar way, developing embryonically in the mother’s body, we are warm-blooded, and we have a similar anatomical structure.
After all, we are primates, just like the monkeys with whom we share a common ancestor. We have an advanced brain, dexterous hands, and a need for social interaction. Over thousands of years, our bodies have changed and adapted to the world. We have developed language and communication, culture, and technology. What’s more, it also stands out from other mammals because it does not reproduce embryonically, but lays eggs, and its body contains venom, which is extremely rare in this group of animals. So why is the platypus a mammal if it has so many unique characteristics? It’s simple – it feeds its young with milk!
Although they seem to not fit into the world of mammals, like platypuses, dolphins are also mammals. They are often confused with fish because of their appearance and aquatic environment. But they are true mammals, as they also feed their young and do not breathe through gills, but have lungs! They have a highly developed cerebral cortex and hippocampus, which allows them to accumulate experiences for decades. Therefore, it is better not to get on an elephant’s bad side, as it may never forgive you for the rest of your life!
Mammals usually inspire sympathy due to their similarities to us. However, some of them can also be terrifying! There are species that pose a real threat to humans and must be watched out for. These are animals known for their territorial behavior and fierce defense of their young.
These include, for example, hippos. Although they may look innocent, as they are ordinary herbivores, they can be very dangerous because they are very strong. They can be fast and aggressive, especially if they perceive you as a threat. Unfortunately, every year there are many fatal accidents as a result of hippopotamus attacks on humans, mainly in Africa.
But the most feared are large predators such as lions, tigers, and leopards. These big cats have strong paws and sharp teeth. They are driven by their hunting instinct, so they may be tempted by a tasty morsel such as you. Although their attacks on humans are rare, be careful, especially when traveling in Africa or Asia, or even in a regular zoo. It’s better not to provoke these kitties!
However, even small, non-aggressive mammals can pose a threat to humans. This is mainly due to the diseases they carry. Bats and rats, for example, can infect humans with various pathogens. In addition, animals with rabies pose a risk, so even our domestic pets need to be watched carefully.
The world of mammals is full of extraordinary species. Although some of them can be dangerous, all of them are necessary in this world.
After all, we humans are the most threatening mammals to other creatures! We destroy animal habitats through pollution and overexploitation of the environment. It is therefore worth increasing our knowledge about mammals in order to better understand nature in the world we are part of.

Mammals are therefore essential to the environment. They are also important to humans. Dogs and cats have been our companions, friends, and family members for years. Farm animals provide us with food. Horses help with transportation. And animals in general are an important subject of scientific research, both on evolutionary and biological topics.
