Children and adults around the world still love the Harry Potter books and movies. Whether you grew up with the Harry Potter series or recently found yourself watching the movies, today we’re going to put your knowledge of this famous series to the test with our interactive quiz. With so many different movies and books to keep you entertained, it’s a series that many people find themselves coming back to over and over again thanks to its beloved characters and storyline.
The Harry Potter movie series is based on the novels of the same names by J.K. Rowling. It was distributed by Warner Bros., and although there were only seven books, there were eight films in the series. The final book was split into two movies, giving fans even more content and excitement. The series began back in 2001 with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and then finished a decade later with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. The movies then continued with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in 2016, taking us back into the past and starting the Wizarding World series. We were introduced to many new characters in every new movie, which is why fans loved coming back again and again to the series.
The majority of the series was produced by David Heyman, and it featured some of our favorite young actors, including Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, in the main three roles. Throughout the series, four different directors worked on the movies, each bringing their own unique touch to the films they directed. The series follows Harry’s aim to defeat Lord Voldemort, but most of you probably know how things went if you’ve watched all of the movies.
The first movie and the final two movies still feature on the list of the 50 highest-grossing movies of all time, and the first and last movies both grossed over $1 billion each. It’s currently the third highest-grossing film series of all time and made over $7.7 billion at the box office. Fans still love watching these movies over and over, and the books, theme parks, and studio tours around the world offer fans of Harry Potter a way to continue experiencing the film series even this many years after.
The idea for the movie first came about in the late 1990s. The film’s producer, David Heyman, received a copy of the first book to his office. It was relegated to low priority until a secretary in his office gave him a rave review of the book. While Heyman originally didn’t like the book’s title, he found himself unable to put it down himself once he gave it a go. He was so impressed by the story and characters, and he started the process to create the first movie and what would become one of the world’s most loved movie series of all time.
It was reported that J.K. Rowling sold the film rights to Warner Bros. for £1 million in 1999, which allowed them to produce the first four films. J.K. Rowling primarily wanted a British cast for the principal roles, with a few Irish actors allowed as well. European characters appeared in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and the casting reflected this. While she was a little reluctant about selling the rights to begin with, as we can see, it was a great success in the long run for everyone involved.
Steven Spielberg was initially slated to direct the first movie but declined that in the end. Many different directors and actors were tested for the roles, but over time they landed on the team who made the movie the successful films we saw in the movie theater. Daniel Radcliffe was discovered in a theater by David Heyman and was soon cast as the title character of Harry Potter.
