Why Is the Weather Forecast Important?

Do you check the weather forecast every day? Or are you spontaneous and take life as it comes? Regardless, today we will discuss what you can learn from the weather forecast. It’s not just a warning about upcoming rain. It’s much more than that! Who needs a very accurate forecast? You’re about to find out!

Weather

Sailors

It was with them that the whole story of weather forecasts began. After all, people who traveled by ship hundreds of years ago knew that it was better not to gamble with a storm! That’s why they used various methods to predict the future. And these weren’t fortune-telling! All they had to do was observe the sky, the clouds, and pay attention to the wind and temperature. Captains who set sail despite many warning signs often ended up badly…

How well do you know the weather? To understand basic meteorological processes, you also need to know a little physics. You can brush up on your knowledge in our special Physics Quiz!

Pilots

It’s not just traveling by ship that can be dangerous in adverse weather conditions. Flying in an airplane also carries risks. But for those who are afraid of flying – don’t worry! Pilots are well aware of this and do everything they can to make every flight as safe as possible. Weather stations provide them with information, so they know how to prepare for a given flight. And if the conditions are very bad, the flight is simply canceled. Even the most whiny passenger can’t change that! In that case, it’s better to go back to the hotel, rest a bit, and set off on your journey the next day.

The most dangerous thing is a storm, which can cause disturbing turbulence, not to mention lightning and large hailstones that can damage the aircraft! But thanks to special equipment on the plane, every pilot knows where the storm is and when it will start. And there is little chance that something will take them by surprise. Observing the weather is also important from an economic point of view. In good conditions, less fuel is consumed.

Farmers

Knowledge about the weather is also important for farmers, and therefore… for all of us! After all, we want large harvests so that we can enjoy delicious, healthy grains, vegetables, and other plant-based foods. However, for plants to grow well, they need specific conditions, which, unfortunately, fate does not always provide. We don’t have much control over the weather (except for how humans cause climate change), so we have to accept it.

But farmers also have special ways of preparing. For example, it is good to know what the winter will be like so that, if necessary, they can protect their plants from frost. Prolonged downpours are also not a threat to them if they regularly drain their crops. What they fear most is drought. It has always been associated with famine! Fortunately, nowadays there are special ways to keep water in the soil for longer. You have to cope!

So every time you crunch on a carrot, thank the farmers in your mind for their hard work!

Emergency Services

Those who don’t work as doctors, police officers, or firefighters don’t tend to think much about the weather. But in these professions, you have to check the forecast to be prepared for anything! After all, many of their operations are primarily about saving lives. So there’s no point in taking risks!

Doctors, for example, can prepare to treat many fractures and bruises when a thaw follows a frost. Why? When the ice on roads and sidewalks slowly melts, it becomes terribly slippery! Even if you walk carefully, you can fall and break your bones on hard concrete.

Of course, firefighters also have a lot of work to do when the weather conditions are unfavorable. The most arduous work is during and after a storm. Strong winds scatter branches and various objects, damaging cars and making it impossible to drive. And someone has to clean it up! What’s more, frightening lightning sometimes causes fires, which requires their courageous work to protect us from the flames. That’s why when storms are forecast, firefighters roll up their sleeves.

All problems in the city are often accompanied by police patrols. They not only catch thieves, but are generally responsible for order and peace. That’s why a good police officer always checks the weather so that, if necessary, they know what to be prepared for on duty!

Do you want to be a firefighter? A police officer? Or maybe an athlete? If it’s the third one, take this Basketball Quiz!

Energy Network Operators

What does the weather have to do with electricity? The first thing that comes to mind is probably that during a storm, strong winds, or other adverse conditions, your power may be cut off, preventing you from playing video games or watching TV for a while. But that’s not all.

Electricity producers also keep a close eye on the forecasts, not only to ensure that you can always use your electrical appliances. They also do this to make the most of the weather. Many energy sources come from natural methods that utilize various weather processes.

For example, special wind turbines produce electricity (i.e., energy) from the force of the wind. There are also hydroelectric and solar power plants. In such cases, specific weather conditions determine how much electricity is “collected.” This is important for them financially and for us too, because when the weather is favorable, electricity can be cheaper! But it also depends on other things.
