The Power Of Christmas

Christmas is a very nostalgic season which brings a lot of positive feelings we only experience during this time. Whether we are children or adults, we can immediately form proper images, or hear jolly songs in our heads, after someone mentions Christmas. This unique time has gotten very classic, to say the least. Christmas tree, colorful lightings, tree bombs, reindeers, Santa Claus, presents ā€“ all of this is associated with Christmas and is responsible for building this strong feeling which cannot be compared with anything else.

Classic Christmas Characters

What contributes to the tradition and our Christmas moods are also classic characters, symbols of Christmas, hallmarks of the holiday season. They are also in the limelight of todayā€™s quiz. Letā€™s not keep them waiting any longer, and take a closer look at their origins and influence they have made.

Santa Claus

Santa Claus, also known as Saint Nicholas, is the greatest symbol of Christmas we can think of. He is the mastermind behind the yearly delivery of gifts to people all around the world. He is depicted as a cheerful old man, with a long white beard and red and white coat. His origins can be dated back to the 3rd century, the charity activity of Saint Nicholas. Nicholas was a monk, revered for his kindness and empathy. One of the stories says that Nicholas inherited great wealth which he gave away to those in need. Because of his actions, Nicholas was named the patron of children and then also sailors.

Santaā€™s Reindeer

According to popular culture, Santaā€™s reindeers pull Santa Claus’ sleigh through the sky, allowing him a fast travel method and means to deliver presents to all children in the world in just one night. The number of reindeers depends on the version, but the most popular one mentions eight majestic beasts pulling the sleigh. This version comes from the 1823 poem ā€˜A Visit from St. Nicholasā€™ by American scholar and writer Clement Clarke Moore. It is also responsible for the popularity and presence of reindeers in Christmas culture. The creatures were even given names and are as follows: Blitzen, Donner, Comet, Cupid, Prancer, Vixen, Dasher, and Dancer.

Another large contribution was the storybook ā€˜Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeerā€™ by Robert L. May and the Christmas song ā€˜Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeerā€™ by Orvon Grover “Gene” Autry. Since then, the red-nosed reindeer was often included in the sleigh team as ninth member.

Helper Elf

Helper elf, or Christmas elf, is a point-eared little creature who works for Santa Claus. It is said there are many elves who live at the North Pole, who form a team of diligent workers assisting Santa Claus in his endeavor. They are often depicted as tiny humanoids, wearing green, pointy hats, and red and green clothes. In popular culture, they first appeared in 1856 in the works written by Louisa May Alcott, an American short story writer and novelist.

The mysterious race of elves has roots in Norse mythology. It can be traced to the words ā€˜Ć”lfarā€™ and ā€˜huldufĆ³lkā€™ which mean hidden folk. It is said that elves can be a combination of Norse legends, Scandinavian and Celtic folklore stories and myths regarding nature spirits, fairies, and elves.

The first ever mention of a Christmas elf was in 1850 in Louisa May Alcottā€™s book ā€˜Christmas Elvesā€™ but it was never completed and published. As for the modern image of hard-working elves busy at Santaā€™s workshops, it was popularized by ā€˜Godey’s Lady’s Bookā€™, also known as ā€˜Godey’s Magazine and Lady’s Bookā€™, an American magazine for women. Its cover art in the 1873 Christmas issue shows Santa surrounded by elves and toys.

Snowman

Snowman is another classic character associated with Christmas. The snowman doesnā€™t have a default depiction, as its appearance depends fully on the imagination of its creators. This snow sculpture is usually anthropomorphic, with pebbles as eyes and a carrot as nose. Snow sculpting is a common winter entertainment and because Christmas Eve occurs during this season, it is also one of the hallmarks of Christmas.

It is unclear at which point in time this activity started. We donā€™t know which snowman was the first or if there was some sort of snowy prototype. One clue we have though, was provided by Bob Eckstein, an author of ā€˜The History of the Snowmanā€™. According to his findings, snowmen go as far back in time as the Middle Ages. This assumption was based on the illustration found in the book of hours, a Christian prayer book.

As for the visual evidence, we have the first photograph of a snowman which was taken in 1853 by Mary Dillwyn, Welsh photographer.
