True Beauty

The South Korean television program, True Beauty is adapted from the Yaongyi Line Webtoon of the same name and follows the tale of a high school student who discovers how to use makeup to transform herself into a beautiful “goddess” in response to harassment and prejudice for being deemed ugly. It aired on tvN every Wednesday and Thursday night at 22:30 from December 9, 2020, to February 4, 2021. (KST).

Plot

Im Ju-kyung (Moon Ga-young), a high school student in her 18s, suffers from an inferiority complex about her looks and has experienced bullying from her friends as well as frequent discrimination from her family since she is seen to be unattractive.

Through binge-watching sessions of cosmetics lesson videos on the Internet, she begins to learn how to apply makeup. Just before switching to her new school, she learns the skill, and when she does, her makeover shows to be transformational as she immediately gains recognition and her classmates refer to her as a “goddess.”

Ju-kyung still thinks she is unattractive despite her newfound fame, and she fears that her classmates will notice her true appearance. This, however, comes to pass when Lee Su-ho (Cha Eun-woo), a dashingly attractive, well-liked, and mysterious student, who she has previously bumped into with her bare face a few times, knows her despite her makeup.

Su-ho is very well-liked by the female students at his school, yet he dislikes being the focus of attention all the time and is frequently perceived as distant and chilly. In addition to his concerns, he is tormented by a secret regarding a terrible past incident that has plagued him for some time.

His relationship with Han Seo-jun, his former best friend, has soured as a result of this incident, and Su-ho is left feeling terrible about the weight Seo-jun placed on him. Ju-kyung, the estranged friends Su-ho, and Seo-jun quickly develop an unexpected friendship as they reveal secrets, share hardships, grow closer, and look to one another for support.

Lim Ju-kyung, a high school student in her early twenties who has been teased by her relatives and ridiculed by her friends for her appearance, considers taking her own life and climbs to the rooftop of a tall building, but she pauses herself and decides to continue on with her life.

A lovely lad intervenes just in time to save her, urging her to think about the suffering her loved ones would endure if she had fallen to her death. She begins learning how to apply cosmetics a few days later using online training videos, and she perfects the skill shortly before moving to her new school. Her friends start referring to her as a “goddess,” which shows how profound the makeover was.

After running into her attractive classmate Lee Su-ho in her bare face at the comic book shop, Ju-kyung finds it difficult to hide her actual identity from her friends. Later, she discovers that Su-ho has not yet identified her as the comic book store’s ugly girl at school.

Han Seo-jun, a rough guy, goes back to school and identifies Ju-kyung as the student who stole his helmet. Ju-kyung learns that Su-ho remembers her. Ju-kyung offers to run errands for Su-ho in exchange for his keeping her actual identity hidden from their friends. Later, she looks all around her bedroom for Han Seo-jun’s helmet but she can’t find it.

Seo-jun starts a fight with Su-ho in the cafeteria after being reminded of terrible Jung Se-yeon’s demise, putting Ju-kyung, an innocent bystander, in the center of the altercation. Ju-kyung finds herself in an awkward situation as a result of the event since reports are going around the school that she is involved in a love triangle with the lads. When Soo-ah sets up Ju-kyung on a blind date, Su-ho finds it bothersome.

Go-woon, the younger sister of Seo-jun, is being teased by her fellow musical club members for playing the lead part while being physically unattractive when Ju-kyung runs into her.

She saves Go-woon from the bullies and transforms her right before the club performs at the school festival as a result of being reminded of her former pain. Ju-kyung remembers the kid who saved her on the rooftop as Seo-jun’s reprimand and a song that was published after Seo-jun’s death serves to remind Su-ho of his terrible background.

Lee Joo-heon, a famous actor, attends Su-ho’s school for a parent-teacher meeting and attracts a lot of attention despite Su-ho’s dislike. Ju-kyung receives a thank-you note from Seo-jun for assisting his younger sister. At the Im family’s home, Ju-kyung encounters an unexpected guest. She eventually runs into the individual she dreads encountering the most and is subsequently abducted by Seo-jun’s adversaries. As Soo-jin, Soo-ah, and Tae-hoon learn the location of Ju-kyung’s captivity, Seo-jun and Su-ho work together to free her.

Behind The Scenes

It was revealed in July 2019 that a TV program will be based on the Line Webtoon True Beauty. The first rehearsal of the script took held in October 2020. Kim Byung-chun’s COVID-19 positive test result caused the production to briefly stop shooting in late December 2020. On November 10, 2020—one month before the start of the series—the first photos from the shoot were made public. The series is available for watching on Rakuten Viki and Viu.
