Antisocial Personality Disorder – Overview

Sociopathy, better known as antisocial personality disorder, is a mental disorder which impairs one’s ability to distinguish right from wrong, understand feelings and needs of others, and follow the rules of the society. To put it short, sociopaths disregard the established order, doing whatever they think is beneficial for their survival. It is common for sociopaths to lie and manipulate others so they can get what they want. Because they have very limited conscience, people with antisocial personality disorder use dangerous and morally dubious methods to achieve personal gain.

Sociopaths are often charming individuals. Even though they have difficulty forming long-term relationships, they can easily blend in the societal life and quickly establish new friendships. Those new relationships, however, are usually superficial and don’t last long. The sociopath’s charm and charisma is often used as a means to exploit other people.

In general, sociopaths display more advanced social skills than psychopaths. Limited as those skills may be, people with antisocial personality disorder have an easier time finding their role in society than psychopaths. Being able to maintain a few close relationships certainly helps in this endeavor.

Psychopathy – Overview

Psychopathy is one of the neuropsychiatric disorders which negatively impacts social skills. A person with psychopathy lacks empathy, is unable to feel guilt, and has no respect for rules. Unlike sociopaths, psychopaths usually can’t form any meaningful, long-term relationships. They are also more prone to criminal activity.

As sociopaths, psychopaths appear as charismatic and charming people. They can easily mingle and have fun with other people. However, the spell is broken when it comes to daily routine. Living with a psychopath may prove very challenging, as they have no regard for the needs and feelings of others. They prioritize their own needs and rarely give something in return.

Psychopaths also tend to be highly intelligent and resourceful. Unlike sociopaths, they are capable of mimicking emotions and behavioral patterns of other people. They use those skills to improve their chances of survival which often leads to a successful life. If a psychopath doesn’t engage in a criminal activity and tries to manage their condition, he or she can live a happy and meaningful life. With proper help, both sociopaths and psychopaths can use their strengths to overcome weaknesses.
