Several psychological tendencies in how people see the environment and develop attitudes are identified by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), a self-report survey used in personality typology. Each of the following four categories—extraversion or introversion, intuition or sensing, thinking or feeling, and judgment or seeing—is given some consideration in the evaluation. Using one letter from each category, a four-letter test result, such as “INTJ” or “ESFP,” is produced.

The book Psychological Types by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung served as an inspiration for the creation of the MBTI by two Americans, Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers. The idea of introversion particularly intrigued Isabel Myers, who identified as an INFP. She attempted to organize the Jungian cognitive processes to make the book more understandable because she believed it to be too difficult for the general population.

Even though the MBTI is similar to several psychological ideas, it has been called pseudoscience and is not generally accepted by academic psychologists. Significant scientific (psychometric) flaws in the indicator include weak validity, shoddy reliability, non-independent measurement categories, and incompleteness.

The influential psychological type theory put forth by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung in 1921 is the foundation for the MBTI. Jung postulated that there are four primary psychological processes—sensation, intuition, emotion, and thinking—through which humans see the world, with one of these processes predominating for the majority of people. The four categories are sensing/intuition, thinking/feeling, extraversion/introversion, and judging/perceiving. There are 16 different sorts, with each person having a favorite trait from each group.

The value of naturally existing variations is emphasized by the MBTI, which was developed for normal populations. The MBTI’s fundamental premise is that each of us has unique preferences for how we interpret our experiences and that these preferences are what drive our interests, needs, values, and motivation.

The indicator is “intended to execute a theory; hence, the theory must be grasped in order to comprehend the MBTI,” according to the MBTI Manual. Carl Jung’s original notion of psychological type serves as the foundation for the MBTI. The judging functions of reasoning and emotion, and the perceiving functions of sensation and intuition, are two opposing pairs of cognitive processes that Jung suggested. Every person primarily exhibits each function in either an introverted or an extroverted form, according to Jung.

Briggs and Myers created their own concept of psychological type based on Jung’s original beliefs, which are detailed below. The MBTI was developed based on this hypothesis. However, even though the MBTI was described by psychologist Hans Eysenck as a “moderately good quantification” of the fundamental concepts behind Jung’s Psychological Types, In any case, none of the models—original Jung’s theory of type or the Myers-Briggs variation—is supported by any controlled scientific investigations, thus they both remain speculative.

MBTI Results

The INFP type was found to be the most prevalent type among students studying fine arts and art education, with 36% of students studying fine arts and 26% of students studying art education being INFPs, according to a 1973 survey of university students in the United States. Teachers in topics like English, social studies, and art were shown to be more likely to be Intuitive-Perceptive types (ENFP, INFP, ENTP, and INTP) than teachers of science and mathematics, who were more likely to be Sensing (S) and Judging (J) types. This conclusion was reached in 1973 research on the personality types of American teachers. A survey of 27,787 high school students revealed that among them, INFP pupils had a considerable predilection for the study of art, English, and music.
