The United States of America is a federal republic that consists of fifty states. I guess I gave away the answer to one question on the quiz! There are forty-eight mainland states with the District of Columbia, plus the state of Alaska and the state of Hawaii. Alaska and Hawaii do not share borders with other US states. The republic also includes several major territories and minor islands.
Each state has its own capital, traditions, and history. Each state also has its own constitution and laws, though they are subject to the federal government.
